Wide of security \u003cbr/\u003eIndian soldiers battled Islamic militants in a forest outside Kashmir's main city, the first major clash in the besieged Himalayan region in almost two months, officials said Wednesday. At least two soldiers and nine rebels were reported killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe firefight started early on Tuesday when government troops came under heavy gunfire in Ringawari, a heavily forested village 45 kilometres (28 miles) north of Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least five suspected militants were holed up in the village and the gunbattle ended Wednesday afternoon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe army had cordoned off the village following a tip that rebels were in the area when troops came under attack, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eOne officer was killed immediately while four soldiers including an officer and a civilian were wounded in the fierce gunfight that followed. The injured soldiers were evacuated in a helicopter to Srinagar's army hospital where the officer succumbed.\u003cbr/\u003eBrigadier Kuldip Singh, of the Indian army, said: \"We had decided, come what way, that despite two fatal causalities we would strike back and neutralise the nine militants.\" \u003cbr/\u003ePolice said that they recovered the bodies of nine suspected Islamic rebels after the gunbattle ended.\u003cbr/\u003eNo civilians were killed in the firing even though eight houses were damaged, a senior superintendent of police said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile firefights and short skirmishes between Islamic rebels and government troops are fairly routine in the beleaguered Himalayan region, long-drawn firefights have been increasingly rare in the last several months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebels have been fighting since 1989 to win Kashmir's independence or see India's two-thirds of the predominantly Muslim Himalayan region merged with neighbouring Pakistan's territory. More than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have died since the start of the rebellion.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia and Pakistan, which both rule parts of Kashmir and claim it in its entirety, have fought three wars, two of them over control of the region, since they won independence from Britain in 1947.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia accuses Pakistan of funding and training the militants in the Pakistani-controlled portion of Kashmir.
