The cab drivers were trying to teach the city Mayor and Manhattanites a lesson - how hard life...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eNew York City streets were on Wednesday left without their trademark yellow cabs when thousands of taxi drivers took the day off. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cab drivers were trying to teach the city Mayor and Manhattanites a lesson - how hard life in the city would be without their service.\u003cbr/\u003eCommuters going to and from New York airports on Wednesday were out of luck.\u003cbr/\u003eThose late for work had to run, there were no cabs to be found. \u003cbr/\u003eTaxis were parked bumper to bumper in parking lots and on streets all over the city. \u003cbr/\u003eIn an act of defiance aimed at New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani taxi drivers took the day off.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of drivers are supporting the 8 (h) hundred member Taxi Workers Alliance who announced a work boycott. \u003cbr/\u003eThe alliance is angered by new rules set down by the Mayor governing their profession, including higher fines for traffic infractions, yearly drug tests paid by the driver, and stricter rules on who can get behind a yellow taxi wheel.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the city's 12 (t) thousand yellow cab drivers left the driving to others.\u003cbr/\u003eNormally New York streets are lined with people hailing cabs, but there was little hope of finding a ride on Wednesday. \u003cbr/\u003eFew cabbies worked and an empty cab was as hard to find as a winning lottery ticket.\u003cbr/\u003eSidewalks were packed as multitudes searched for other means of\u003cbr/\u003etransport.\u003cbr/\u003eFor cabbie Jimmy Mallett it was a day to enjoy the first sunny weather of the month, and to stand up for his co-workers.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"A cab driver drive the yellow cab. There must be somebody to drive the yellow cab and that person must be taken care of. We cannot be shoved around, making new rules.
