variety of government policies. \u003cbr/\u003eDemonstrators showed their opposition from issues ranging from US navy bombing practice in Puerto Rico and the possibility of military intervention in Somalia, to racial profiling by police.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was a heavy police presence outside the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, keeping the 500 protesters from disturbing the participants as they discussed the global economy. \u003cbr/\u003eHorst Kohler, the IMF's Managing Director, stated in no uncertain terms that wealthy countries must change the way and the speed at which they conduct business in order to give the world's poor a better chance. \u003cbr/\u003eUS Deputy Treasury Secretary Kenneth Dam said that the American economy may no longer be declining. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said consumer confidence was up, durable new orders were up and unemployment was down, but he went on to caution that there could still be one drawback to recovery - namely, another massive terrorist strike on America.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance's Finance Minister Laurent Fabius expressed concern that economies could be completely destroyed if terrorism continued.\u003cbr/\u003eHe wondered if countries around the world were up to the task of fighting terroism on a global scale.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral hundred protesters also gathered at Columbus Circle, the starting point for a march slated for later in the day.
