The Steinway baby grand piano that once sat in the Oak Room is missing some keys.\u003cbr/\u003eYet, this is not junk that will go on the auction block at a Christie's showroom in Manhattan next Wednesday (March 15). This is junk with a pedigree: castoffs from the Plaza Hotel.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 1,000 items from the Plaza's past, from its bright red bellmen's uniforms, to the gilt metal sidechairs that once adorned its legendary ballroom, will be offered for sale in 350 lots at the one-day auction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 805-room grand hotel on Central Park South closed for renovation last year, and is scheduled to reopen in the fall as a mix of 182 high-priced condominiums and a smaller 282-room inn.\u003cbr/\u003eBits of the old Plaza have been disappearing for a year. Last May, the hotel had a giant tag sale for shoppers seeking mattresses, curtains, armoires, uniforms, phones, and anything else that would likely be headed for the trash as part of the $350 million renovation.\u003cbr/\u003eThis latest auction is higher-grade items, expected to fetch much higher prices.\u003cbr/\u003eThe parquet dance floor used in the hotel's ballrooms is expected to fetch between $2,000 and $3,000. \u003cbr/\u003eOriental rugs from the Presidential suite could go for $3,000 apiece, Christie's said. A pair of 18th Century, gilt bronze, cut glass, 21-light candelabras have an estimated value of $10,000 to $15,000.\u003cbr/\u003eChristie's also sought to package lower-priced items in a way that will appeal to Plaza enthusiasts.\u003cbr/\u003eBuyers can bid on a \"Breakfast in Bed\" package that contains pyjamas, slippers and robes bearing the Plaza monogram, or a \"Dinner for 8\" lot of place settings valued at $800 to $1,000.\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of special collections for Christie's auction house is Cathy Elkies.  She expects this auction will attract interest from all over the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe auction house selected items for the sale it thought would represent \"The Plaza experience,\" and might be snatched up by nostalgics whose parents had been married at the hotel, attended parties there, or simply wanted a piece of the old hotel's legend.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hotel is famous from many Hollywood movies, for example when it played host to Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's \"North by Northwest.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFamous writers also frequented the hotel --  F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain and Ernest Hemmingway all lounged at the Plaza.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso Truman Capote, who hosted of one of the hotel's most memorable events, a masked ball thrown by the writer in 1966.\u003cbr/\u003eTo further promote the auction, Christie's is staging a re-creation of Capote's celebrity-studded bash in one of its galleries on Tuesday night.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 500 guests are expected to fill a hall furnished with actual Plaza chairs, tables, carpets and chandeliers.
