When I first came to the United States with The Police, we played the Nassau Coliseum and he just turned up. He knew all of our songs. A couple of weeks later I spent an evening with him and he sat at the piano and he played me everything from Beethoven to Gilbert and Sullivan to Mozart to The Beatles. Little Richard. He's an incredible entertainer and a great songwriter. I'm thrilled to be here,\" Sting said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also spoke of his current Broadway musical, 'The Last Ship.'\u003cbr/\u003e\"For the last five years we've been concentrating on it just to get it to Broadway, it's an amazing dream. I walk down 52nd Street and I see the marquee and go, 'Wow,' I did it. People like it, and leave the place loving it and coming back, so we're doing good, thanks,\" Sting said.\u003cbr/\u003eBrooks walked the red carpet with wife, Trisha Yearwood. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm really happy and very proud,\" Brooks said.\u003cbr/\u003eBrooks was also happy to be in the company of such great talent, including his friend Billy Joel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It makes it unbelievable. Stevie Wonder, Joan Baez, Stephen Sondheim - Are you kidding me? I don't know how my name got mixed into this, but I'm going to enjoy tonight.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEmmylou Harris was there to present Joan Baez with her honor. She, too, was impressed by the group of honorees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They're so many talented people out there who have carved out a very specific place. They're unique, that's why we're honoring them. So I don't know of it's that difficult to see people who are worthy, and it ends up being a really interesting mix, we wouldn't pay attention to them if they didn't have something special to offer - special and very unique,\" Harris said.\u003cbr/\u003eGloria Estefan and husband Emilio were happy to see their friends honored.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're going to see some amazing talent and celebrate it. I think that performance rights organizations have been so important for the writers and musicians that it's always good to celebrate them,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eThere was no secret who Ne-Yo was most excited to see.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Definitely Stevie Wonder. Don't get me wrong, I'm definably a huge Garth Brooks fan. A lot of people don't know that about me. But Stevie Wonder is part of the reason that I am even here. By that, I mean as an artist. There would be no Ne-Yo without Stevie Wonder. So I'm very, very happy he's being honored tonight and can think of very few people are more worthy,\" Ne-Yo said.\u003cbr/\u003eMotown founder Berry Gordy was there to present the award to Stevie Wonder. Before the ceremony, he spoke about the gifts he saw in his most successful writing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, it was the same thing I saw in everybody else. I saw it in Stevie Wonder. I saw it in Smokey Robinson. I saw it Norman Whitfield. I saw it in this new writer Ron Miller, who wrote, 'For Once in My Life.' We had more hits by Holland-Dozier than any of them because they were all talented. But it was not so much me at all; it was the atmosphere about Motown. There was a love, and I believe that competition breeds champions, but you cannot let the competition overcome the love.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe event marked ASCAP's historic 100th anniversary.
