Masked Hamas militants marching  \u003cbr/\u003eForces loyal to the Gaza Strip's Islamic militant Hamas rulers opened fire on November 12th as tens of thousands of the rival Fatah group's supporters held a rally on the third anniversary of the death of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.\u003cbr/\u003eOne civilian was killed and at least three were wounded, witnesses said.\u003cbr/\u003eHamas said the dead man was killed by Fatah gunmen who had fired from rooftops, but that could not be confirmed.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier large numbers of Hamas police - some in riot gear - took up positions at key intersections, outside government ministries and near parliament.\u003cbr/\u003eFatah activists decorated streets with yellow Fatah flags and Arafat posters but Hamas police did not intervene although some officers allegedly wrote down the licence plates of some cars flying Fatah flags. \u003cbr/\u003eThis was the movement's biggest show of strength since Hamas overran Gaza in June, expelling the security forces of Fatah's leader, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.\u003cbr/\u003eOn December 15th, Hamas marked the 20th anniversary of its founding with a huge rally in Gaza City, sending a message of strength and defiance even as it is struggling to keep Gaza afloat.\u003cbr/\u003eTens of thousands of Hamas supporters gathered in a sandy lot and nearby streets, waving green  flags. \u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd appeared to be equal in size, if not bigger, than the crowd marching in support of Hamas' rival, Fatah, in the same spot a month earlier.
