Truck with tank drives off\u003cbr/\u003eMedical teams have been sent to the flood hit areas of northwest Pakistan amid fears that waterborne diseases could become more widely spread.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Pakistanis have fled their cities and villages and some 1,500 people have been killed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe authorities warn that swollen rivers could soon submerge many areas, making more Pakistanis victims of the worst natural disaster in the nation's history.\u003cbr/\u003eSaeed Khan stands by the side of the road in the pouring rain. \u003cbr/\u003eThe former taxi driver waits by the roadside every day in the hope that a food relief truck will stop and hand out much needed provisions. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen a truck stops, Saeed and dozens of other flood victims rush to join a queue. \u003cbr/\u003eToday Saeed is not lucky and the truck leaves before he gets a food parcel. \u003cbr/\u003eHe can't believe his bad luck .... his home has been destroyed by the floods, his family live in squalor in a tent and he doesn't have enough food to give them. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't know what wrath of God has hit this country, created all these problems for us, its all looking downhill for us now, what will I do. My whole house is destroyed; I now stand here and stop aid trucks for food.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSaeed shows the camera crew the way to what was once a five bedroom house ....his home. \u003cbr/\u003eNow there is nothing but rubble. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is my house, it had five bedrooms, look what's happened to it now\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eHome is now a tent which he shares with eight members of his family and several cows. \u003cbr/\u003eHe distributes some bread amongst the residents of the tent. \u003cbr/\u003eFlies hover and rest on the few pillows and bedding that the family own. \u003cbr/\u003eThe combination of mud, dung, flies, dirty water and lack of sanitation is a recipe for sickness. \u003cbr/\u003eSaeed says that everyone is ill. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We've got sick because of all this, my children are sick, I am sick with diarrhoea and stomach infection, and there is disease all over the place.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Khan family's story is not unique here; no clean drinking water and lack of sanitation have put millions in serious danger of falling ill.\u003cbr/\u003eSave the Children conducted rapid assessments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) (one in flood-affected villages of Dera Ismail Khan (D I Khan) on 6 August and one in Swat district on 3 August. \u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers found that floods have severely affected drinking water sources. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunity members in 71% of surveyed villages are obtaining drinking water mainly from rain and flood water, while 14% are fetching water from rivers or springs. \u003cbr/\u003eThis greatly increases the risk of waterborne diseases, as the flood waters and rivers and springs are contaminated. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunities stated that they were forced to use contaminated water for drinking purposes because they had no other option\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of Nowshera's universities, doctors from Peshawar set up a free health clinic for various ailments.\u003cbr/\u003eMedic Dr. Hazratullah Khan says diarrhoea, chest and throat infections and skin ulcers are the most prominent conditions here. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Up till now we have noticed three major diseases, the first one is diarrhoea, which is because of dirty water and lack of hygiene, then there are throat and chest infections after living outside for so many days and getting wet in the rains, and thirdly its skin diseases, the children are developing skin ulcers,\" \u003cbr/\u003eBetween 31 July and 8 August, the most common diseases were scabies, respiratory tract infections, and acute diarrhoea according to World Health Organisation (WHO) figures.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn Nowshera, an alert for suspected acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) was reported from Mardan Medical Complex.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mardan town are the offices of an NGO called the Integrated regional support programme. Their job is to test the government's water supply which is currently being supplied to all major relief camps in the province.\u003cbr/\u003eWater analyst Ali Rashid conducts the complex process which takes twenty four hours to complete.\u003cbr/\u003eThe NGO also chlorinates the government's water supply, 200 millilitres of the chlorine solution for each tank as he demonstrates.\u003cbr/\u003eThe future looks difficult and troubled for Saeed's family, their home washed away with all their belongings. \u003cbr/\u003eAll they could salvage from their flood ravaged home were the clothes on their back, the straw sewn beds they sit on and their cows. \u003cbr/\u003eAs of 9 August, WHO along with other NGOs distributed 142 cholera kits, 125 health emergency kits, three surgical supply kits, 550 vials of anti snake venom, 5 100 hygiene kits and newborn kits, and 700 clean delivery kits.\u003cbr/\u003eThese kits will cover the needs of around 800 000 people for one month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe floods hit the country more than two weeks ago, beginning in the northwest before spreading down the country and inundating thousands of villages. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 1,500 people have been killed, and the U.N. estimates up to 7 million people need emergency assistance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations appealed for nearly $460 million Wednesday to provide immediate help to millions of\u003cbr/\u003evictims of the worst floods in Pakistan in living memory and said it will need millions more to help rebuild the devastated country.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan's U.N. Ambassador Abdullah Haroon said on Thursday that more supplies of clean water are needed to prevent cholera and other water borne diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eHaroon said the number of people affected could rise further because the floods are spreading and a week of further rains is predicted. \u003cbr/\u003eHe worried that as many as 16 million could be
