Clinton waves to crowd\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThirteen months after the Monica Lewinsky affair first rattled the White House, senators are poised to acquit President Clinton and end only the second presidential impeachment trial in U-S history. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough it is a foregone conclusion that Clinton will keep his job, the scandal has caused immeasurable damage to the president and the presidency.\u003cbr/\u003eThe saga began thirteen months ago when the name Monica Lewinsky first became known to the world.\u003cbr/\u003eJudgment day for William Jefferson Clinton has arrived - thirteen months after the sex scandal which has rattled the White House began.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lewinsky saga came out of another case which has plagued Clinton for years - the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1994, Jones filed a suit alleging that Clinton had sexually harassed her when she was a state employee and he was governor of Arkansas.\u003cbr/\u003eIn January 1998, Jones helped the president to make history.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was forced to give a deposition, making him the first sitting president to testify as a defendant in a lawsuit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe former secretary was met with a crush of cameras as she arrived to hear what her former boss had to say.\u003cbr/\u003eAmid the questions about what went on in the Little Rock hotel room, were questions about other women.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the names which came up was Monica Lewinsky - a young woman who had worked at the White House.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen asked whether or not he had ever been alone with Lewinsky, Clinton said that it was possible.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he denied having a sexual affair with the intern.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin days of the questioning, the story exploded onto the front page of the Washington Post and the first of the cast of characters became known.\u003cbr/\u003eLinda Tripp, a Pentagon employee and a friend of Lewinsky's, had secretly taped telephone conversations during which the young woman talked about her affair with the president.\u003cbr/\u003eTripp turned the tapes over to Clinton's nemesis, Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 1994, Starr had been investigating the real estate deal the Clintons had been involved in, known as Whitewater.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time Starr wanted to know if the president had lied under oath in the Jones deposition, and whether he had encouraged Lewinsky to lie as well in an affidavit for the Jones case.\u003cbr/\u003eA day after the Washington Post broke the story, headlines across the nation screamed scandal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crisis reached fever pitch, with Clinton denying he had had an affair with the woman who was young enough to be his daughter.\u003cbr/\u003eWith his wife standing behind him, Clinton made his most forceful denial yet at the end of January 1998.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)  \u003cbr/\u003e\"But I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time, never. These allegations are false, and I need to go back to work for the American people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President\u003cbr/\u003eThe press, at the time, was in full pursuit of Monica Lewinsky.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the world had seen video of her hugging Clinton in 1996 and other photographs, camera crews had yet to capture a recent shot.\u003cbr/\u003eThat changed one night at the Cosmos Club, where she met her attorney and friend of the family, William Ginsburg.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the two left, the flashbulbs went off and the nation got its first good look at Monica.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, a Court panel gave Starr authority to investigate the Lewinsky matter. \u003cbr/\u003eThroughout the winter, spring and summer, dozens of people were called to testify before a grand jury.\u003cbr/\u003eClinton's secretary, Betty Currie, had often signed Lewinsky into the White House at weekends.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was also the one who had retrieved presidential gifts given to the intern.\u003cbr/\u003eStarr's prosecutors wanted to know whether the president had coached Currie for her grand jury appearance. \u003cbr/\u003eWashington power broker, Vernon Jordan, was also put in the spotlight.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a close friend of Clinton's, there was speculation that he had carried out a job search for Lewinsky in exchange for her sworn testimony denying a presidential affair.\u003cbr/\u003eTripp, who was vilified by many for betraying her young friend, also testified, as did presidential aide Sidney Blumenthal.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors wanted to know if he had passed derogatory information about Lewinsky to reporters, allegedly fed to him by the president.\u003cbr/\u003eEven Lewinsky's mother, Marcia Lewis, was brought in front of the grand jury.\u003cbr/\u003eBut absent from the proceedings was Lewinsky herself.\u003cbr/\u003eGinsburg, a Los Angeles medical malpractice lawyer, became a fixture on the talk shows, but couldn't reach an immunity agreement with Starr.\u003cbr/\u003eSo Lewinsky replaced Ginsburg with two veteran Washington lawyers, Jacob Stein and Plato Cacheris.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon after, the two sides reached a deal.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"...reached an agreement today. For her full and truthful testimony she will receive transactional immunity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Plato Cacheris, Lewinsky's attorney\u003cbr/\u003eDetails about the presidential affair had been coming out for months, with terms like oral sex becoming part of everyday conversation.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 17th, Clinton was forced to testify via videotape from the White House.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of denials, he admitted having an inappropriate relationship with Lewinsky.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I had intimate contact with her that was inappropriate. I do not believe any of the contacts I had with her violated the definition I was given.
