An earth-like system would be stable here. From what we understand of our own solar system we think that Jupiter played an important role for life in our own solar system, protecting us from comets. Animation view of Jupiter-like planet orbiting in the 55-Cancri system\u003cbr/\u003eA international team of astronomers announced on Thursday they have discovered 13 new planets among the stars.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of those planets, they say, is similar to the planet Jupiter and is found in a solar system similar to our own.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring a briefing at the US space agency NASA, team members said the Jupiter-like planet orbits a star resembling the sun at the same distance as the Jovian giant is from the sun in our system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe planetary system similar to the sun's belongs to the star 55 Cancri, 41 light years away in the constellation of Cancer. The star was already known to have another planet, discovered by astronomers Geoffrey Marcy and Paul Butler in 1996. \u003cbr/\u003eThe newfound planet is between 3.5 and five times the mass of Jupiter, and its slightly elongated orbit takes it around the star in about 13 years - quite close to Jupiter's orbital period of 11.86 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team also announced the discovery of the smallest extra-solar planet ever detected - a world with a mass 15 percent that of Jupiter and 40 times larger than the Earth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe newly discovered planets bring the tally of planets found orbiting stars outside our own solar system to more than 90. Astronomers hope the launch of powerful new space telescopes in about 15 years will for the first time reveal the existence of other
