Wide of hybrid car driving away of RSA building
Red is the colour of love, but green is the colour of the eco-conscious bride and groom.
In the UK, couples who opt to say 'I do' in an eco-friendly and ethical way can now count on a wide variety of choices.
From green bridal gowns to fair-trade wines, and ethical jewellery to eco-wedding planners, a growing number of companies are offering services to help couples respect the planet while swearing eternal love to one another.
Weddings can be lavish affairs, a big feast for hundreds of guests marked by abundance to celebrate the beginning of a new life together.
But for couples concerned about the environment, a wedding is also about respecting the green and ethical principles by which they live their every day lives.
This means lowering the environmental impact of the wedding reception by reducing carbon-emissions, eating local produce and avoiding services that may involve human exploitation, such as child labour.
Considering all the possible options may be a daunting task, but in the UK a growing number of services - from eco-wedding planning, to ethical jewellers - are now at hand to help the eco-conscious couple plan their important day.
The Royal Society of Arts, a British charity committed to the development of arts, manufacture and commerce doubles up as a location for eco-weddings in London.
Situated near one of central London's biggest streets - the Strand - the RSA is served by dozens of buses and is close to a tube station.
This is one of the reasons Sarah Holloway chose it as the location for her marriage to husband Theo on 11th October last year (2008).
Holloway is a sustainable development manager for a travel company, so having a green ceremony was always going to be a priority for her.
When planning their ceremony, Sarah and her husband looked at different aspects of a wedding and thought the biggest environmental threat would come from their 70 guests travel arrangements.
Since many of their friends live in London the majority of their guests got to the wedding using public transport, thus lowering the impact of their journeys.
The RSA is licensed to host civil ceremonies, allowing Sarah and Theo to get married and celebrate the wedding in the same location: keeping the wedding down to one single journey was another way to curb pollution.
For guests in need of individual transport, the RSA is teaming up with a private green car service, Green Tomato Cars.
Unlike regular taxis, the company uses hybrid cars with two engines, electric and fuel.
During low-speed journeys, the hybrid car runs on the battery motor and then switches to the petrol engine at higher speeds, while the battery motor is recharging.
Rosie Ames of Green Union has made eco-weddings a profession.
Over the last two years she has helped couples personalise green-themed unions.
Ames says that those seeking her advise are usually couples from their late 20's to their early 40's, mostly professionals.
Sometimes this is their second marriage and in some cases they already have children.
Through her contact list of service providers, Ames encourages couples to support local producers for food and flower arrangements.
Clients are steered towards venues that have recycling facilities, wedding gowns from designers who use eco-friendly materials and wedding invitations. Made from recycled paper.
Ames says the cost of an eco-wedding is not higher than that of a more traditional ceremony; it can be as cheap or as expensive as the couple decides it to be, often depending on the number of guests that will attend.
Toni Gibbs is the acting private events manager at the RSA. Her role is to coordinate all wedding and private events at the location.
Gibbs says the RSA recycles 70% of its waste. The company also has an in-house water purification system, that allows the catering team to bottle its own still and sparkling water.
The RSA wedding menu is prepared with food available in season, with no pre-made ingredients coming from outside; rather, it is based on British and Scottish ingredients, along with some organic products.
English wines along with organic and fair-trade beverages are also available, for those conscious not just of the environmental impact of a wedding, but who want to make sure workers are paid a fair wage for their services.
Gibbs says the cost of an eco-conscious wedding menu is the same as a more traditional meal; the 3-course-wedding breakfast is about 40 pounds (58 dollars) per person.
Flowers provide that special splash of colour and scent that makes a wedding unique.
Sometimes brides go a long way to order flowers that are not available in their own country just to have that extra touch of glamour.
But Gail Smith, owner of Gail Smith Flowers in London, says it is possible to be creative and make special flower arrangements for a wedding with seasonal, locally produced flowers, thus avoiding transporting them by plane.
Small plants, says Smith, can be used as wedding favours and taken home by guests, who can then re-plant them in their own homes.
In some cases, Smith wraps the plants in the bride and groom's old clothes, adding a personal touch to the wedding favour.
In other instances, she borrows the couple's family china and uses it as a vase to arrange the flowers.
The true star of any wedding is the wedding gown, but for some brides that poses big question marks: What if it is made using child labour? And what if the fabric is produced with polluting materials?
Eco-wedding designers like Lucy Tammam work to make sure their dresses are eco and ethically correct.
British-born Tammam started working in India 4 years ago and now has an atelier in the city of Bangalore.
There she employs workers from disadvantaged backgrounds and trains them to become skilled tailors.
One of Lucy's goals, she says, is to make sure her production is as ethical as possible, so that workers are paid a fair wage, treated fairly and that no children are ever employed.
Her eco-friendly bridal gowns are made of natural products such as organic silk cotton and organic fibres grown without pesticides.
Tammam also uses peace silk, which is produced by allowing moths to emerge from the cocoon, instead of killing them.
The cost for Tammam's wedding dresses ranges from 500 to 1,100 pounds (from $736 to $1,620 dollars USD).
Another way to lower the wedding carbon footprint is to skip paper wedding invitations and send them via e-mail instead.
Some couples are already using this method which also allows them to save money.
Although eco-friendly, e-mail invitations are a solution that may leave older guests unhappy, or may not be appropriate for more formal ceremonies.
Greener paper invitations are now widely available.
Vinati's Paper in London produces recycled and hand-made paper invitations.
The company's products are mostly manufactured in villages in India, which helps to sustain local employment by paying workers a fair wage for their work, but will increase the carbon footprint because of transportation.
For those taking an all-round approach to marrying in an ethical way, engagement rings and wedding bands can also be a source of concern.
Conflict diamonds are stones produced in Africa, in areas controlled by forces opposed to the central government, which use the sale of diamonds to finance wars opposed to those internationally recognised governments.
Ingle & Rhode is an ethical jewellers in central London specialising in using only conflict-free diamonds and fair trade gold.
Its gold is produced without the use of mercury or cyanide which represents a double threat to the workers and the environment.
David Rhode, co-owner of the company, says they can trace their raw materials all the way from the mines to the moment they reach their laboratories in London, thus guaranteeing their products are all made and sourced in an ethical way.
The cost of an engagement ring can range from 900 to 9,000 pounds (from $1,323 dollars to $13,328 dollars).
Wedding bands can go from 300 to 1,300 pounds (from
