New homes assigned to workers by the government were modest and near identical to one another. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, a recent package of new measures by President Raul Castro has introduced commerce into the real estate market and has made self-employment in small family businesses possible.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has led to a remodelling of homes and the addition of interesting features to their facades. \u003cbr/\u003eBlue dolphins, green pine trees, and naked women's torsos, all made of concrete, now decorate some of the homes across the island.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's even an invasion of gnomes, young and old, male and female, which have taken over many of the small gardens in Cuba.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is the success of some Cuban families and some citizens which are now beginning to think in terms of their success,\" said Herrera.\u003cbr/\u003eA large green toad next to a pink flamingo may not be to everyone's taste, but as examples of conspicuous consumption, they are hard to ignore.\u003cbr/\u003eHEADLINE: Cuba art show celebrates kitsch as new chic\u003cbr/\u003eCAPTION: Cuba has a new look: its more artistic citizens have begun to respond to the beneficial effects of recent economic reforms.
