But he lost  most of his family in the Nazi holocaust. \u003cbr/\u003eUp until now there's been no memorial to the massacre of half a million European  gypsies even though the loss is still acutely felt.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (German)\u003cbr/\u003eI get the feeling everything is stirring in me again. It had gone away, but now after all  these years it's coming back. I have nightmares about it and I wake up screaming.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Franz Rosenbach, former Buchenwald prisoner\u003cbr/\u003eToday (Saturday) at Buchenwald a memorial was finally unveiled, funded by the German  government in memory of the gypsies from France, Holland, Poland, the Czech  Republic amongst others.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is on the very site of the concentration camp huts, since destroyed.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, Gypsy leaders say their loss was forgotten.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nazi cruelty to the gypsies was denied and deliberately forgotten by German  officials over the past decade. It was only in 1982 that Chancellor Helmut Schmidt  officially acknowledged the genocide of the gypsy population\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Romani Rose, Chairman of German gypsy community\u003cbr/\u003eBut the state minister for science who laid a wreath Saturday says the truth was  suppressed because it was under the East German regime.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, he regretted that it had taken so long for the memorial to be raised.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (German)\u003cbr/\u003eI'm sorry it took fifty years. These Ukrainian survivors returned  today to their former  camp, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of its liberation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first prisoners here were Communists. They were followed by Jews, gypsies,  homosexuals and students.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 56-thousand people died between 1937 and 1945.\u003cbr/\u003eTomorrow (Sunday) there'll be a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the camp's  liberation by US soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
