People lined up in show ring with their dogs\u003cbr/\u003eIt is not common to keep dogs as pets in Pakistan but many were on display with their proud owners at a recent dog show in Pakistan's largest city.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a society where many Muslims believe that dogs are unclean and should not be kept as pets, the contest also attracted some controversy.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a show tent outside Karachi, dog owners gathered to show off their prized and beloved pets. \u003cbr/\u003eDozens of breeds of dogs were on show at the event including Alsatians (also known as German Shepherds), Weimaraners and Labradors. \u003cbr/\u003eKarachi resident Mrs Kamal brought her Dalmatian \"Erick\" to be judged at the show. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she loves keeping a dog as a pet.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I like dogs because they are best friend. They always love you back, whatever you are.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMrs Kamal with Erick won a ribbon at the recent event, with the Dalmatian judged as one of the 'Best in Breed'.\u003cbr/\u003eCanine judge Ahmed Virk is also one of the organisers of the show.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains exactly what the judges are looking for in the dogs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are various breeds which are competing in this show. What you try to do as a judge is to gauge how close the best winning dog or how close each dog is to that ideal standard and you grade them accordingly.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlsatian \"Tango\" was closely examined by the judges.\u003cbr/\u003eThey looked in his mouth, examined his shaggy coat and took his vital statistics with a measuring tape.\u003cbr/\u003eTango's owner, Jamal Bakhir says : \"I think it's good to create awareness of animals, particularly dogs and so we brought our dog over here to see how the show is and get it looked at and see what the breed is like and so far it's a very good show.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the Karachi dog show was not universally popular and attracted some criticism.\u003cbr/\u003eOne Islamic scholar, Dr Miraj-ul-Huda Siddiqui,  says Islam is against the keeping of dogs as pets.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The teachings and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, have a lot of importance for Muslims.
