And through his exposure I think there's a chance for it to survive, especially at this point of time it's very crucial because these types of designs and clothing are being replaced by second hand clothing and modern clothing. I'm also using traditional designs and at the fashion shows in Paris where I 'show' my work I'm trying to stay away from the 'Ethnic' styles and designs because they tend to be considered lower quality products. Using the Ethiopian's excellent craftsmanship, which is very high quality, I can sell the products at much higher prices.\"\u003cbr/\u003e14. Various Arnold Haas at home\u003cbr/\u003eEthiopia's textile and cotton industry employs more than half a million people. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, the gross value of production was estimated to be more than US$200 million, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike other textile producing countries much of the clothing remains inside Ethiopia for domestic markets. \u003cbr/\u003eBut one European fashion designer is beginning to change that. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's set up shop in Addis Ababa and is using the nation's ancient weaving techniques and unique designs to produce internationally appealing accessories.\u003cbr/\u003eArnold Haas has been a fashion designer for 23 years, working in Paris and New York as a stylist for magazines such as Vogue and Elle. \u003cbr/\u003eSo to the outsider it may seem like a strange choice to move to Africa to work, but that's exactly what the Austrian did four years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eArnold's combining Ethiopian cotton, wool, ancient weaving techniques and traditional designs to create handbags and shawls for high-end markets in Europe, Asia and the US.\u003cbr/\u003eHaas says he discovered early on that his Ethiopian designs were very popular.\u003cbr/\u003eTo make his products, Arnold buys his textiles from numerous Ethiopian producers including 'Trio Craft' in Addis Ababa. They make rugs, cushions and bed linen using traditional weaving techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eBy collaborating with these local Ethiopian firms, Arnold is giving designers and producers the opportunity to break in to usually inaccessible international markets.\u003cbr/\u003eElisabeth Kassa is the manager of Trio Craft.  She says Haas has given her company a new lease of life.\u003cbr/\u003eArnold employs staff at 'Haile Garments', one of the city's factories which churns out both low and high quality garments, to make his popular bags.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a national workforce of over 500,000, the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Industry knows how important it is to tap in to foreign markets. \u003cbr/\u003eAt present, the textile industry is accountable for only 5% of total exports out of the country, but there's big potential. \u003cbr/\u003eKebede Shiferaw, from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, says forging European contacts is vital for Ethiopian business people.\u003cbr/\u003eArnold's work also attracts expatriates living in Ethiopia and every year he puts on his 'Wubet' (beauty in Amharic) fashion show revealing his latest designs. \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopian Meskerem Assegued has been the curator for Arnold's last three fashion shows in Addis Ababa. This year she used dancers to display the designs.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says Haas is giving great exposure to traditional Ethiopian designs.\u003cbr/\u003eArnold's bags and shawls are now being stocked in stores all over the world including back home in Austria as well as in countries in Europe, Japan, Korea and the USA. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he has no plans to return to the fast-paced and highly-competitive fashion industries in New York or Paris, preferring instead to seek inspiration for his designs in his new home in Africa.
