Exterior of mosque\u003cbr/\u003eHindi/English/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAn attempt to curb noise pollution in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta has upset some Muslim clerics.\u003cbr/\u003eA court directive to cut down noise pollution says the mosques should comply with the restrictions placed on using microphones for their prayer calls.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the politicians joining the issue as champions of minority religious rights, the protest could snowball into a major controversy.\u003cbr/\u003eA prayer call for Muslims early in the morning.....\u003cbr/\u003eBut a high decibel, earsplitting noise for others.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a bid to control the rising levels of noise pollution in Calcutta, a High court ruling has set a 65 decibel sound limit for the prayer calls made on the microphones.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has also banned the use of microphones for religious purposes from 9 pm to 7 am.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first of the five Muslim calls to prayer, known as \"Azaans\", comes two hours before sunrise and the last is two hours after sunset.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Muslims feel that their prayer calls are being unfairly singled out when there are worse offenders of the anti-noise guidelines.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Hindi):\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our Azaan has been happening for ages...it's nothing new.
