Two robots facing each other, one kicks the ball\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Campus Party Technology Festival in Berlin around 10-thousand people gathered for a six-day festival focusing on technology and entertainment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut among the humans were the real superstars of the festival - some 100 robots that have travelled from around the world to be there.\u003cbr/\u003eAmy is a cute robot developed by the French company Alderbaran Robotics, who likes to dance to Michael Jackson. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has 21 separate small engines in her body, enabling her to move quite a lot like a human.\u003cbr/\u003eShe has been programmed to do Michael Jackson's Thriller dance, something that always draws a crowd of admirers.\u003cbr/\u003eAmy is one of dozens of robots on show at Campus Party Europe, held until Saturday the 26th of August in the German capital Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003eSome, like Amy, were built by professional robot makers.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers have been created by enthusiasts, often spending a lot of their time in their garages creating more and more outlandish robotics.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not just about creating something fun and exciting.\u003cbr/\u003eBenoit Libeau, who works as an \"emotional architect\" at Aldebaran Robotics explains the purpose of Amy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to sell service robots. Maybe for robots that can be a companion for older people or robots that can help younger people in education tasks,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Libeau they build robots that are more like cartoon characters than real humans for a reason.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople find it easier to connect to a character than a humanlike robot, and this can be especially important when trying to teach children with autism to relate to emotions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Its easier for a child with autism to learn to differentiate emotions on a simplified version of a human like this robot, and then to transfer it on a human,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother, somewhat less complex robot on show, is one that was inspired by the London 2012 Olympic mascot Wenlock.\u003cbr/\u003eHe can also dance, admittedly somewhat less graciously than Amy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as Rui Baptist, a teacher who has travelled with the robot from Braga in Portugal explains, he has also helped children with their schoolwork.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This robot was constructed by students from secondary level. I'm physics teacher and I use the robot to teach subjects like physics, electronics and programming.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA group of students from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom are also at the festival to show of their creation, a small car-like robot that can be programmed to perform various tasks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot is driven using a Nintendo Wii handset and it takes only about 20 minutes to assemble each robot.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group has spent the last few days building as many robots as they can and they now have 15 of them spread around their laptops at the festival hall.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd as Alexander Lee, Engineering student at Cambridge University, hopes these robots will also be useful in education. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The ultimate goal for a robot kit such as this is to take it in to schools,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are planning on having a themed day where maybe they will start by assembling the robot, put it together and run some of our demo programs. And then they will learn how to program the robots themselves.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCampus Party Europe is a six-day festival, held at Berlin's unused Tempelhof airport building.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 10-thousand people attend to listen to speeches, participate in workshops and meet other like-minded people from around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the festival the robotic football match draws crowds.\u003cbr/\u003eDifferent groups pit their robots against each other in a small playing field at the festival grounds.\u003cbr/\u003eToday two robots created at the University of Virginia are playing a match.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth have been programmed to play football by students at the University of Hamburg.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd as Nels Lokite explains, programming a robot can be very time-consuming.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Nearly all things are written by us.
