Michelangelo's \"David-Apollo\" sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a media preview before \"David-Apollo\" goes on public view on Thursday, Giulio Terzi said the display of the sculpture represents \"the bonds of bilateral relations between Italy and the United States\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe described the unfinished Michelangelo masterpiece as a symbol of the innovation and revolutionary concepts developed by Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sculpture, which will only be shown in Washington, is from the year 1530 and is on loan from the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. \u003cbr/\u003eUncertainty over the statue's identity by art historians led to it's double name - questions remain over whether Michelangelo intended it to be a representation of the Old Testament hero David or the Greek God of Art, Apollo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum's curator Alison Luchs said the unfinished marble on the statue's back has been interpreted as either being a sling, for David, or a quiver for arrows, for Apollo.\u003cbr/\u003eLuchs said that like many of the master sculptor's unfinished works, the \"David-Apollo\" statue allows modern audiences \"see the sculpture taking shape\" adding, \"you can really follow the movement of Michelangelo's hand driving the chisel across the stone.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe sculpture was last shown in the US capital in 1949 when it drew nearly 800-thousand visitors. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was also a centrepiece for those who attended President Harry Truman's inaugural reception at the gallery.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time, it will be on view until 3 March 2013, to include crowds attending the inauguration of President Barack Obama.\u003cbr/\u003e\"2013 - Year of Italian Culture in the United States\" is a project that aims at promoting Italian culture and identity in all the areas that have distinguished its tradition from past to present, including art, music, stage, landscaping
