Various of Pisarenko and Praum looking at postcards\u003cbr/\u003eOne of Portugal's top priorities, since taking over the rotating presidency of the European Union on Sunday, will be to convince its EU partners of the necessity to establish closer links with some of the countries where non-EU immigrants come from.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to maintain and fund its current social welfare system the EU needs the arrival of thousands of immigrants in the coming years.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to official statistics released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Portugal had a population of 275,960 non-EU immigrants in 2005. 1,374 Moldovan and 2,070 from Ukraine. \u003cbr/\u003eThe figures for both countries have tripled in the last five years, according to the statistics.\u003cbr/\u003eVladimir Praum was born in Chisinau, capital of the Republic of Moldova.\u003cbr/\u003eHe left his country three years ago and after two years of working illegally he finally obtained legal residency last year.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I've been living and working in Portugal for a long time. My whole family is in Moldova and I would like to be able to see them.
