Close pan to micro needle pad
Scientists are aiming to revolutionise care for diabetics with a high tech monitor which automatically alerts doctors and relatives if a patient has dangerously high blood sugar.
There are 366 million type 1 and 2 diabetics worldwide - the United Nations says that $11 billion (USD) is needed to prevent this and other non communicable diseases especially in the developing world.
This apparently insignificant little pad could change the way diabetics live.
They''re almost invisible, but on the surface are scores of needles.
Each 1 millimetre long micro-needle contains its own sophisticated sensor, or nano wire which is completely invisible to the naked eye.
Together they''re in a constant cycle of collecting and analysing the blood of the patient it''s attached to.
You won''t be able to feel it either according to its inventors, they say it''s designed to stay permanently and painlessly in contact with a patient''s arm.
The technology being developed at Swansea University is in its infancy.
The team is now in the middle of developing a transmitter which will be able to send an SMS message to a hospital, or to relatives as soon as a patient is at risk of a hypoglycaemic attack.
The idea is to ensure there is no delay in providing emergency treatment, even is the diabetic is alone and unconscious.
Dr Vincent Teng is Swansea University''s nanotechnology expert.
He says the needles "have a diameter of about 15 microns. The sensors which is developed using nano-wires technology will be integrated into the micro-needles, and that offers painless detections of the blood glucose, and continuous monitoring of blood glucose in the patient".
An undetected hypoglycaemic attack can prove fatal as student Michael Evans is fully aware.
Evans was just a couple of years old when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
His family has a history of diabetes so he understood quickly the importance of regular blood tests.
Evans has to take insulin injections which means he has to test his blood glucose levels up to 10 times every day.
Evans believes all diabetics would welcome developments which can improve their independence.
He says: "With me it would mean not having to carry my blood sugar testing machine around.
