August 7th is the third and final day, known as 'Malbock', of...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eDozens of activists rallied in front of the South Korean embassy in the Thai capital, Bangkok, on Tuesday calling for action to halt Korea's consumption of dog and cat meat. \u003cbr/\u003eAugust 7th is the third and final day, known as 'Malbock', of the Korean dog meat eating festival, Boknal. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Today is the last day of Boknal, which is the dog eating festival in Korea, and it's a global event and the Korean KARA, the Korean Animal Rights Advocates, are asking us to help support the cause in Korea, that's why we are here today,\" said Gabriela Moriarty, a volunteer at Animal Activist Alliance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Boknal festival is celebrated at the height of the summer, and dog meat is eaten to supposedly increase stamina to withstand the heat.\u003cbr/\u003eAnimal rights activists claim that more than five (m) million dogs are killed each year to feed South Korea's appetite for dog meat.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, campaigners had their faces painted and chanted \"friend not food, friend not food!\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome held posters of traditional Korean dishes made with dog. \u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of eating dog-meat has been in the news in Thailand recently after the interception of several large consignments of the animals en route to neighbouring countries. \u003cbr/\u003eSmugglers often buy the dogs for next to nothing, or in exchange for cheap plastic goods like buckets and bowls, then transport them across borders where they are slaughtered and eaten.\u003cbr/\u003eTuesday's activists handed over a protest letter to a representative from the Korean embassy. \u003cbr/\u003e1.
