He is the only American president ever to have visited Northern Ireland while in office. He made it a high priority in American policy and provided a great deal of support. So I think that the people of Ireland know that President Clinton played a very important role, and helped create the circumstances in which this could happen. \u003cbr/\u003eQ. How do you think that history will reflect on your and Clinton's contribution?\u003cbr/\u003eA. Well, I think President Clinton deserves a lot of credit for it: he really did help. He made it a high priority for American policy and I think that history will judge that he played a crucial role right up to the last minute before the agreement was approved.\u003cbr/\u003eQ. Do you think the voters will react positively?\u003cbr/\u003eA. I hope very much that they will. There'll obviously be a spirited campaign. There's opposition to it from some political parties and some political leaders. It's going to be a tough debate now, but I think this offer is going to be the opportunity for political stability and reconciliation. By itself the agreement doesn't accomplish that -  it will be many steps down the road, but it's a very important first step.\u003cbr/\u003eQ. Can you tell us about some of your unexpected surprises?\u003cbr/\u003eA. Well, the most unexpected thing was that I was there for three and a half years. When I went I thought I'd be there just an occasional day for a few months and then I'd be back home -  and it took three and half years to finish, and two years of negotiations. It was much longer than I ever anticipated. In the end it turned out to be worth it. \u003cbr/\u003eQ. What will you do now?\u003cbr/\u003eA. Well I haven't seem my family for several weeks and I haven't been in my office for months. So I have to get re-acquainted both with my family and my business here, and then I'm going to take some time off in Maine this summer- that's what I'm really looking forward to now.\u003cbr/\u003eQ. Do you think you will stay involved in this process?\u003cbr/\u003eA. My formal role has been completed but, yes of course I'll stay involved. If the President goes, and he's considering that, he's asked me to accompany him. And I will go back of course often because I love the place, and I love the people. They're just tremendous people; they're energetic, hardworking and very, very  positive, and I think that if this peace can hold, you'll see a new society and a real opportunity of prosperity in Northern Ireland.\u003cbr/\u003eQ. Did you hold onto any personal mantra when things got rough or when there was a lot of hostility ?\u003cbr/\u003eA. Well, I wouldn't describe it as a personal mantra, but I always had faith that we could get something done. I never once despaired or thought the situation was hopeless.
