It doesn't make sense for how we use and share things today,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When we think about how today people use things, people share things, people make things for their own personal use, a figurine for your child to play with, it makes us take a second thought about what copyright law should do, what we want it to do.\"\u003cbr/\u003e3D printer cafes, like this one in Buenos Aires, are now popping up across the developed world.\u003cbr/\u003eThey allow people to gain easy access to printers and create their own original designs.\u003cbr/\u003eBut because the technology is so new, the US is still yet to address the issue this new technology raises.\u003cbr/\u003eSamuel fears that well-intentioned US legislators may make ill-informed decisions when it comes to the technology.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The state of the laws and then the people who are trying to tighten up copyright law and in some instances tighten up patent law too, those efforts to tighten those laws would impact 3D printing,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They would make it harder for people to print things at home, they would make it harder for more people to make new 3D printers and come up with new 3D printing technology.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTechnology like this food-safe printer - shown off recently (8 January 2014) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas - allows the casual confectioner or seasoned pro to make their own sugary creations.\u003cbr/\u003eSamuels hopes that if the country's government does look at the laws around 3D printing it won't leave too sour a taste in the mouth.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We hope that as Congress does look at copyright law, it understands that people who just want to use and partake in these new technologies don't get punished for that,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mass availability of 3D printers was evident at this year's CES.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 3D printing zone of the show floor drew busy crowds which gawked at the printers and their creations.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not just professionals who can create these intricate designs.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, there are numerous websites which allow users to legally share content they have created. \u003cbr/\u003eMakerbot's Thingiverse and Autodesk's 123D both allow users to upload and download digital models which they can then 3D print.\u003cbr/\u003eSamuels says corporations are watching file sharing communities to ensure their content is protected.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We haven't really seen widespread targeting of individuals yet for 3D printing things at home,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have seen though corporations pulling particular instructions and patterns down from the Internet.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEasy access to digital files is an issue that other industries have grappled with before. \u003cbr/\u003eThe advent of digital music files and the ease which they can be shared online put the music industry and its consumers at odds.\u003cbr/\u003eMany in the 3D printing industry, including Diego Porqueras of Bukobot, hope those lessons have been learned.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The music industry came with a lot of lawyers behind it when it first started, when people first started pirating a lot,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But the 3D world, I think it should be embraced, and if they come in early enough I think they'll take a lot of advantage of people with 3D printers that want to print things.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, legal expert Samuels says things aren't that simple.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If a certain design that you want to print is covered by copyright, then if you print that you are infringing, arguably someone's copyright,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eIt all means that big brands - including toy-makers - need to think about protecting their own designs, be they masterpieces or not.\u003cbr/\u003eCydni Tetro founded 3DPlus.me, a website which provides personalised 3D designs, and is consultant for Disney.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says big brands are always keen to protect their intellectual property while paying respect to fan-inspired creations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Companies are always worried about losing their designs and you're always walking this fine edge of how you embrace what's happening in the open-source and the fan communities and how you protect your brand.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Tetro, big brands from every sector will soon reveal how they plan to licence their designs without losing ownership of the original product.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It doesn't matter if you're in entertainment, if you're in sports or if you're in gaming, all of these companies are built on pretty massive licensing channels that they understand that as technology has evolved,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"3D printing just happens to be a 'how' something is printed, it doesn't change the fact that you still have to have a unique offering that someone wants to engage with. All of those companies are in very active engagements right now about how they'll deploy 3D printed products over the next year, and we're gonna see that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThat'll lead to 3D printed designs like this.\u003cbr/\u003eA storm trooper character from the Star Wars films on display at CES, but made under license from the Star Wars trademark.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Porqueras, there should be a way for keen 3D printers and big brands to happily co-exist, regardless of what the US congress decides.\u003cbr/\u003e\"3D printers really need content to really get even more taken advantage and widespread,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And if companies really take advantage of that and just charge nominal fees to download your favourite character off Star Wars and 3D print it.
