Exterior sign of museum\u003cbr/\u003eNASA announced on Tuesday, on the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight, where its three remaining space shuttles will retire when the programme ends this year.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at an anniversary ceremony, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said the shuttles will go to museums in Cape Canaveral, Los Angeles and suburban Washington when the programme ends this summer.\u003cbr/\u003eShuttle Atlantis will stay in Cape Canaveral at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, just miles (kilometres) from the pair of launch pads where it was shot into space. \u003cbr/\u003eEndeavour is headed to the California Science Center, miles from the plant where the shuttle was built; and Discovery's new home will be the Smithsonian Institution's branch in northern Virginia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Smithsonian is giving up the prototype Enterprise, which NASA said Tuesday will now go to New York City's Intrepid museum. Enterprise was used for test flights in the 1970s.\u003cbr/\u003eBolden, a former astronaut, choked up when he made the announcement, \"for all of them, take good care of our vehicles,\" he said, adding, \"they served a nation well, and we at NASA have a deep and abiding relationship and love affair with them that is hard to put into words.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-one museums and visitor centres around the country put in bids for the spaceships. NASA is giving shuttle simulators and other parts to some of them.\u003cbr/\u003eTuesday was an important day in the history of space exploration.  \u003cbr/\u003eNot only did the United States and NASA celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight, remembering the 1981 launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia, but this date is also the 50th anniversary of man's first journey into space.\u003cbr/\u003ein 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first human spaceflight.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the commemoration ceremony in Cape Canaveral Tuesday,  American astronaut Catherine Coleman spoke to space centre workers from the International Space Station.\u003cbr/\u003eColeman said the retirement of the shuttle programme should not be viewed as an end but as the next step.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It represents the next step in extending humanity's reach further into space,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, it was a celebratory atmosphere in the four museums across the country that will soon house the space shuttles and the Enterprise.\u003cbr/\u003eAt New York City's Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum, workers and visitors alike were over the moon about the news that the Enterprise was on its way.\u003cbr/\u003eThe NASA prototype used for test flights in the 1970s will arrive sometime next year. \u003cbr/\u003eVolunteer Sam Folsom - a retired Marine pilot who tested the first space suit - said it's important for children to see the history of space flight. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So much of our history is lost and this is a piece of history that we cannot afford to lose.
