Archduke Dominic Habsburg  last year offered to sell the castle to the local authorities for US$80 million, but that offer was rejected.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday (2 July), he formally listed the castle for sale to the right purchaser.\u003cbr/\u003eHe predicted the castle would sell for more than US$135 million.\u003cbr/\u003eThis imposing castle that dominates the surrounding countryside in Transylvania is for sale. \u003cbr/\u003eSome have claimed the castle once belonged to Vlad the Impaler, who is thought to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker's vampire character, Dracula.\u003cbr/\u003eVlad III was a prince of Wallachia, now part of Romania, who lived from 1431 - 1476.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is said to have punished criminals by impaling them on stakes, thus earning the nickname 'impaler' \u003cbr/\u003eHis surname Draculea (sic), is a diminutive derived from his father's title Dracul, which means dragon or demon in old Romanian. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, there is no evidence that Vlad ever lived at Bran castle.\u003cbr/\u003eSome legends maintain that Vlad was briefly a prisoner at the fortress.\u003cbr/\u003eIts purported links with Dracula have made Bran castle one of the biggest tourist attractions in Romania.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated that more than 400,000 visitors a year, over half of them foreign, visit the castle. \u003cbr/\u003eAlexandru Priscu, the castle's press officer, says the price and the identity of any new owner will remain a secret. \u003cbr/\u003eBran castle was seized by the communists after the Second World War. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was returned to its owners, the former Romanian royal family, last summer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heating system in the castle isn't working properly, and the upkeep costs are enormous. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the nearby village of Bran (200 kilometres/ 124 miles north of Bucharest) almost everybody works in the tourist trade.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal people are nervous that the living they make from producing and selling Dracula souvenirs, along with a thriving bed and breakfast trade, will be threatened by the sale of the castle. \u003cbr/\u003eThe castle's current owner wanted to sell it to the local authorities for $78 million, but they did not respond within the legal time limit.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe asking price is said to be more than $100 million (m) US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Romanian government can't afford it, but officials don't want Romania's most famous landmark to be sold off.\u003cbr/\u003eA few anonymous buyers are said to be in a race to buy it. \u003cbr/\u003eCorin Trandafir is the lawyer handling the case. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that they have had anonymous offers in excess of the asking price. \u003cbr/\u003eAlexandru Priscu has a
