Wide of hearing\u003cbr/\u003ePresidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain took their disagreements over the Iraq war into Senate committee chambers on Tuesday, where they traded barbs and questioned the top US commander.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the political climate heating up Iraq has been a major campaign cry for both the Democrats and the Republicans.  \u003cbr/\u003eMcCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, backs the war and made that clear in an opening statement and cross-examination of General David Petraeus.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocrats Clinton and Barack Obama say they would end America's military involvement within the first year or two of their presidency, should they win.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Democrats contend the five-year-old war has made the United States less safe and is a crippling drain on the American economy.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCain says US forces are succeeding, and, in a political shot about his Democratic rivals, claimed it \"would constitute a failure of political and moral leadership\" to pull out before Iraq's military and government are ready.\u003cbr/\u003eA sombre-faced Clinton waited her turn then hit back at McCain: \"I think it could be fair to say that it might well be irresponsible to continue the policy that has not produced the results that have been promised time and time again.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePetraeus also acknowledged in questioning from McCain and committee chairman Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, that the Iraqi military operation against militia forces in Basra late last month was poorly planned.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who ordered the assault on Basra, did not consult sufficiently with American forces.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCain said the operation was \"a disappointment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bush administration has used Basra as an example of how the Iraqi government is willing to start stepping up to the plate.\u003cbr/\u003eNot all on Capitol Hill agree.\u003cbr/\u003eObama again said that getting involved in Iraq was a blunder but acknowledged that the men before him were now in the position of having to clean up the mess.  \u003cbr/\u003eObama said that he believed a timetable for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, was a way of increasing the pressure for progress \"in a measured way.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Nobody is asking for a precipitous withdrawal but I do think that it has to be a measured but increased pressure,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, Obama went a step farther, suggesting that Iran be brought into what should be a diplomatic surge in order for it to work.\u003cbr/\u003ePetraeus said he would recommend  that the current draw down of troops be put on hold for 45 days after July, when the so-called \"surge\" force is to have left the country.\u003cbr/\u003ePetreaus refused to commit to a date for restarting the withdrawal.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile McCain is virtually guaranteed the Republican nominee, Clinton and Obama, are fighting a close and historic battle for their party's nomination. \u003cbr/\u003eObama has accumulated more delegates, won more primary and caucus contests and leads in the popular vote against Clinton.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest AP tally of delegates showed Obama with 1,638 to Clinton's 1,502, including super delegates, party leaders and elected officials who are free to vote for
