Wallace was a specimen collector. He collected wildlife, he collected plants and he would send these back to England. So he saw great variation in natural life and so he could come to that conclusion very quickly that there wasn't these static forms of life, that they were gradually changing. And so he quickly came to this notion of evolution and then discovered that natural selection would be the mechanism for it. But Darwin's the one who really nailed it down and proved it in his work 'The Origin of Species'."
12. Various shots of a stuffed Tiger in the Visitor centre
Next month the scientific community will celebrate the achievements of Charles Darwin.
February 12 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and this year also sees the 150th anniversary of the publication of his work on evolution called 'On The Origin of Species'.
However, Alfred Wallace, the man who is jointly credited with the discovery of evolution alongside Darwin is largely forgotten.
Visitors to Singapore Zoo can see animals that are unique to the South East Asia region from the famous
orangutans to lesser known primates like siamang monkeys and Malaysian tapirs.
These are some of the creatures that naturalist Alfred Wallace would have documented on his voyage around the region.
Wallace was a student of Charles Darwin's writings and inspired by his work, Wallace undertook a journey beginning in 1854 that took him to many of the islands around Singapore and modern-day Indonesia.
In his book 'The Malay Archipelago', Wallace noted the differences between regional species.
Professor Michael Gumert, teaches Evolutionary Psychology and Primatology at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
He says that Wallace was interested in how geography influenced the development of organisms, a science which is now called biogeography.
For Wallace, Singapore was just a stopping off point on his way to Borneo.
The naturalist was nevertheless impressed by his findings in the area in Singapore known as Bukit Timah, and in his book he declared: "In all my subsequent travels in the East I rarely if ever met with so productive a spot."
150 years ago, the rich vegetation of Bukit Timah provided a natural habitat not just for beetles, squirrels and monkeys but also tigers, which could be found in Singapore until the 1930s.
Wallace was a collector of animals and insects and much of his collection can now be seen in London's Natural History Museum.
After his stay in Singapore, Wallace travelled East stopping on the islands of Borneo, Sulawesi, Bali and Lombok.
It was during these travels that he came across the animals that were to help him to develop his theory of what is now known as 'The Wallace line' - an imaginary divide separating the islands.
Wallace found that that the flora and fauna found to the East of this line were more Australian, marsupials etc while the life found to the West of this line was predominately Asian.
To substantiate these findings, his writings included descriptions of Malaysian Tapirs, Babirusa, different species of monkeys and, of course, tigers.
Darwin and Wallace wrote to each other to discuss their theories and on July 1 1858, Charles Darwin presented the ideas on evolution and natural selection of both men to a meeting of the Linnean Society.
He credited Wallace as a collaborator, though he was not present.
Wallace dedicated his book 'The Malay Archipelago' to Darwin whom he considered a friend and colleague.
But despite Wallace's findings, it is Darwin and his book 'On the Origin of Species' that is still widely recognised today as forming the basis for the theory of evolution.
Gumert says that Darwin's carefully documentation of his work means that he was able to make a convincing case for the theory of evolution and natural selection in 'On the Origin of Species'.
Darwin's book changed the way we think about the world we live in and the development of all living organisms including ourselves.
One hundred and fifty years after Darwin's publication of his work his theory is still recognised as one of the most important works of science, whilst his collaborator Alfred Wallace has become the 'forgotten evolutionist'.

<div class='action-container
