Close up of Ignacio Vela and his 'bajon'  UPSOUND (Spanish) man shouting\u003cbr/\u003e\"Long life to the people of San Ignacio, long life to Bolivia.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEach year the festival of San Ignacio de Moxos in Bolivia mixes pre-Columbian and European Christian traditions in a colourful fiesta of music, dancing and worship. \u003cbr/\u003eMusic from a traditional giant flute, known as the \"bajon\", is a key part of the celebrations.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe instrument pre-dates the arrival of the Jesuits in Bolivia at the end of the 17th Century. \u003cbr/\u003eNow it's feared the skills needed to make the 'bajon' might soon be lost.  \u003cbr/\u003eSan Ignacio de Moxos, a small village in north eastern Bolivia, was discovered by the Jesuits at the end of the 17th century.\u003cbr/\u003eUpon their arrival, they found the indigenous people had a pronounced taste for culture, music, and fiestas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe priests used these traditions to encourage religious devotion among the locals.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1767, the Jesuits were expelled by the Spanish crown, but local devotion to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of Jesuits, had continued both in the traditions of faith and music.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fiesta del Santo Patrono de Moxos and is celebrated each year in front of the village church.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's held in honour of the Saint San Ignacio (Ignatius), whom the faithful believe protects the village.\u003cbr/\u003eTo mark the day, a priest conducts a special ceremony using three bells. A loud explosion marks the official start of the festivities.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional fighters known as Macheteros or 'Machete Holders', wear a crown of plumes which represent the sunrise - the symbol was worn by the village chiefs to honour their gods.\u003cbr/\u003eMass is celebrated where musicians from the San Ignacio music school play traditional baroque music. \u003cbr/\u003eThe institution was founded by nuns in 1999 to preserve the music traditions and culture of Santo Patrono de Moxos. \u003cbr/\u003eNow it sends local pupils across the globe to display its unique mix of traditional Amazonian culture and religious heritage.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violons at the music school are made locally by a stringed instrument maker. Miguel Guce says he learnt the trade from his grandfather.\u003cbr/\u003eThe giant flute or 'bajon' was used by the people of Santo Patrono de Moxos before the arrival of the Jesuits. \u003cbr/\u003eRaquel Maldonado, Director of the San Ignacio Music School says the 'bajon' was played in groups or pairs in a similar fashion to the Peruvian altiplano pan pipe. She adds that the people of  Santo Patrono de Moxos also had their own native dance.\u003cbr/\u003eMade of rare palm tree fibres, the instrument is made up of individual 'trumpets' of various sizes up to 1.80 metres (5.905 feet). The trumpets are linked together in the same style as the commonly known panpipe altiplano flute, the Phukuna. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly four 'bajon' remain in the village and only one man retains the skills for making them. \u003cbr/\u003e79 year-old  Ignacio Vela is currently working on a new instrument.  He's working with the an Ignacio music school to ensure that his expertise is not lost forever. \u003cbr/\u003eThe school is also involved in preserving musical scores which were dispersed among indigenous communities after the Jesuit priests left. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2001, a three week expedition took place to remote villages in the region - some only accessible by foot and pirogues. \u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the school recovered rustic violons that dated back five generations. They also recuperated more than 7000 thousand musical scores from villagers in the Amazonian jungle who still play the music today.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scores are now preserved in the local museum.\u003cbr/\u003eIgnacio has no need for them. He knows the tunes by heart. Each year he makes a point of taking part in the evening procession - he says it's too hot during the day. Despite his grand age, he would not miss it for anything.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival of San Ignacio de Moxos ran from July 28 - August 4,
