Wide swearing in ceremony \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa's health minister was removed from office on Friday as a new cabinet was being sworn in, accused of causing countless unnecessary deaths by promoting nutritional supplements instead of conventional medicine for people with HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a move which won him widespread praise, new president Kgalema Motlanthe on Thursday announced that he was shifting Manto Tshabalala-Msimang from the health portfolio to a lesser post in charge of government communications.\u003cbr/\u003eBarbara Hogan, a respected anti-apartheid veteran who criticised former President Thabo Mbeki's AIDS policy, was sworn in as health minister at an afternoon ceremony along with other Cabinet appointees in the new administration.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Treatment Action Campaign, which fought numerous legal battles against Tshabalala-Msimang and once branded her a \"murderer,\" threw an impromptu party in Cape Town, saying it was celebrating on behalf of the estimated 5.4 million South Africans who have the AIDS virus - the most of any country in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eNonkosi Khumalo of Treatment Action Campaign said she had allowed many deaths to happen under her leadership, and \"disgraced the ministry of health as a whole.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMbeki was notorious for his denial that HIV caused AIDS and his refusal to accept the scale of the epidemic. \u003cbr/\u003eTshabalala-Msimang was one of his closest allies for the nine years of their office and was easily the most unpopular and ridiculed government minister in post-apartheid South Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eAIDS activists blamed the health minister for spreading confusion about AIDS. \u003cbr/\u003eThey won a landmark court case against the ministry in 2002 to force it to provide pregnant women with drugs to stop them infecting their unborn child; and in 2003 to give antiretroviral therapy to people in the more advanced stages of the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eIn June, the Treatment Action Campaign and South African Medical Association won a case forcing the health ministry to close down the operations of Matthias Rath, a German vitamins peddler who claimed that anti-AIDS medicines were toxic and that micronutrients would cure the disease, and who preyed on people in poor townships. \u003cbr/\u003eTshabalala-Msimang refused to condemn Rath and critics said it was because she shared his views.\u003cbr/\u003eTshabalala-Msimang repeatedly stressed her mistrust of antiretroviral medicine, saying too little was known about the side-effects.\u003cbr/\u003eHer preference was to use nutritional remedies. Olive oil, the African potato, beetroot, garlic and lemon were her favourites.\u003cbr/\u003eTshabalala-Msimang's views - which made \"Dr. Garlic\" a favourite target for cartoonists - reflected mistrust in traditional African societies of \"western\" remedies and she had loyal supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eShe shrugged off constant calls for her resignation, which reached a crescendo at the
