We''ve got to have electric vehicles increasingly brought into the vehicle fleet in order to get those emissions down and to meet our climate goals,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile an emissions-reducing move toward hybrids and compressed natural gas cars is ongoing, Newsom wants to encourage the use of purely electric vehicles.\u003cbr/\u003eOne example in the running is the Finland-based manufacturer THINK, which will retail its City model for about US$30,000 after government incentives. \u003cbr/\u003eWith a range of 100 miles after a full charge, the car has an operating cost of about 2 cents per mile, according to the company.\u003cbr/\u003eRange is a key concern for electric car owners, who need to be sure that they won''t deplete their batteries and get stranded without a charge. \u003cbr/\u003eThis means partnering with other local governments to create a regional network of chargers, Newsom says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"San Francisco has really tried to advance itself not rhetorically but substantively as a leader in terms of alternative fuel vehicles.
