Close of sign\u003cbr/\u003eThe US government is warning doctors and hospitals not to use any products from a specialty pharmacy that makes Depo-medrol, a type of steroid suspected in a meningitis outbreak that has claimed five lives.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, clinics and medical centres rushed to contact patients in 23 states who may have received the apparently fungus-contaminated shots. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Food and Drug Administration urged doctors not to use any products at all from the Massachusetts pharmacy, the New England Compounding Centre, that supplied the suspect steroid solution.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. John Jernigan, a medical epidemiologist for the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said there were now 35 reported cases of the outbreak in six states.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the CDC was working alongside state and local health departments to inform patients who may be at risk and instruct them to seek health care if they were experiencing symptoms of the outbreak.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's possible we might identify more cases in the coming days,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is not clear how many patients received tainted injections, or even whether everyone who got one will get sick.\u003cbr/\u003eRichard Jenkins was given three injections at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He said he had been contacted but was not given clear instructions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They called and just wanted to know how I was doing,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They didn't say anything about the meningitis outbreak, or anything like that, or I need to take any kind of precautions or if I had any kind of symptoms to notify them or whatever.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, people in six states - Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana - have contracted fungal meningitis, and five of them have died. \u003cbr/\u003eAll had received steroid shots for back pain, a highly common treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Dan Richman, an anaesthesiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, said this was the first time he had ever seen this in 22 years of giving epidural steroid injections \u003cbr/\u003e\"There's no way of knowing or protecting against this because the anaesthesiologist who's doing the injection, the nurse who's preparing the materials for the injection would have no idea that this is a contaminated lot,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an alarming indication the outbreak could get a lot bigger, Massachusetts health officials said the New England Compounding Centre has recalled three lots consisting of a total of 17,676 single-dose vials of the steroid, preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate. \u003cbr/\u003eAn unknown number of those vials reached 75 clinics and other facilities in 23 states between July and September, federal health officials said. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral hundred of the vials, maybe more, have been returned unused.\u003cbr/\u003eThe type of fungal meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common forms. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mould and is treated with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Jernigan said the onset of symptoms was occurring about four weeks after patients received the injections and included fever, headaches and neck stiffness.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've also seen in a few patients, signs and symptoms of stroke, sudden onset of slurred speech, dizziness, difficulty walking, sudden weakness, etc,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators this week found contamination in a sealed vial of the steroid at the New England company, according to FDA officials. \u003cbr/\u003eTests are under way to determine if it is the same fungus blamed in the outbreak.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company has shut down operations and said it is working with regulators to identify the source of the infection.\u003cbr/\u003eCompounding pharmacies often obtain drugs from manufacturers and then split them into smaller doses, or mix ingredients sold in bulk. \u003cbr/\u003eAny of those steps can easily lead to contamination if sterile conditions aren't maintained. \u003cbr/\u003eFor example, the fungus suspected in the current meningitis outbreak can spread in the air.\u003cbr/\u003eTennessee has by far the most cases with 25, including three deaths. Deaths have also been reported in Virginia and Maryland.\u003cbr/\u003eMeningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. \u003cbr/\u003eSymptoms include severe and worsening
