world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study by environmental activist groups the Blacksmith Institute and Green Cross of Switzerland, said makers of chemical products are responsible for more than a third of the contamination.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study also said tests indicate 80 percent of the water taken from wells near the river is not safe.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people live along the river, and environmentalists say a court-ordered cleanup of decades of industrial pollution and sewage has made little progress in five years. \u003cbr/\u003eMany residents still need to be relocated, according to the court ruling, and toxic substances are still emptying into the Riachuelo.\u003cbr/\u003e\"All the work done here is cosmetic and aesthetic, but what the Riachuelo is really known for, is the district, which is known as a tango hotspot and home of the popular football team Boca Juniors, remains one of Buenos Aires' top tourist draws.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 20-thousand people live near the river basin, while thousands of industries discharge effluent into the river, according to the report.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the measures proposed for cleaning up the river would be a strict restriction on dumping pollutants and raw sewage.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to environmental group Greenpeace, a full cleanup could take 30 years, because factories need to come up with ways to dispose of waste other than dumping it in the river. \u003cbr/\u003eContaminated mud from the riverbed will also have to be cleared.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we're asking is that, firstly, the industrial discharges have to stop, and that the contamination has to end,\" said Greenpeace Coordinator, Lorena Pujo.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Then, what needs to be done with the riverbed can be determined.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe push for the current cleanup came five years ago, when Argentina's Supreme Court ordered the national government and Buenos Aires city and provincial officials to work with the Authority of the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin to get the river clean.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile it's agreed progress has been made, including the recent removal of sunken ships from the river and rubbish from its surface, environmentalists are pushing for a more extensive cleanup. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Authority said 891 businesses are working on plans to stop contaminating, and 411 have already changed their production processes. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far, 225 (m) million US dollars have been spent on cleaning the river, making water supplies safer and treating sewage. \u003cbr/\u003eClients are
