Various Chocolate
University researchers have discovered a way of making electricity using a chocolate-eating bug.
A bacteria that likes to eat chocolate produces hydrogen, which in turn creates electric power.
The sweet-toothed bug could also provide a way of dealing with chocolate waste.
Scientists at Birmingham University in the UK have discovered a chocolate-eating bacteria that could contribute to the production of electricity by using their own enzyme, called hydrogenase.
Hydrogen is produced by the Escherichia coli bacteria when it consumes chocolate and caramel waste. There is enough hydrogen to supply a fuel cell, which in turn generates electricity that powers a small fan.
Microbiologist Lynne Mackaskie, and fellow scientists from Birmingham University, powered the fuel cell by feeding the bacteria waste from the local Cadbury chocolate factory, including diluted caramel and nougat .
The waste was voluntarily donated to the scientists at Birmingham University. Tony Bilsbourgh, spokesman for Cadbury, believes there are practical ways to generate energy, and resourcefully dispose of factory waste.
The new experiment process could provide a use for chocolate waste in the future, waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
Instead of being thrown away, the chocolate waste could be turned into hydrogen and used to help power factories, or sold on to energy companies.
Hydrogen is a colourless and odourless gaseous element, the lightest and the most abundant chemical element in the universe.
Lynne Mackaskie believes hydrogen could be a super fuel of the future. The experiment has shown that it has applications far beyond the lab.
Dr David Pentfold says the uses for hydrogen are endless. The converted electricity from hydrogen could fuel transport such as trains or buses.
Third world countries with an abundance of sugar could also use this concept to generate their own electricity.
Lynne Mackaskie also got the same bacteria to tuck into catalytic converters from old cars. The bacteria recovered the precious metal "palladium" after the converters were immersed in a vat with hydrogen, and liquid waste from spent converters.
(Palladium has the appearance of pure silver, and does not tarnish.
