Close of Ayumu in laboratory
For centuries we have assumed that compared to other animals, humans are superior in all areas of intellectual ability.
But now reseachers in Japan have demonstrated that in specific memory tasks, young chimpanzees were better at cognitive tasks than people.
Think you're smarter than a ten year old? How about a 5-year-old chimp?
Japanese researchers have pitted young chimps against human adults in tests of short-term memory, and overall, the chimps won.
The research, conducted in Kyoto by Professor Matsuzawa Tetsuro, was published online in the Current Biology journal in December 3, 2007.
Matsuzawa has been studying chimpanzees closely for the past 30 years, both in the laboratory and in the field.
Over the years, he has developed an intimate relationship with the chimpanzees in his laboratory.
Matsuzawa, the director university's Primate Research Institute, says many people still believe humans are superior than all creatures in all aspects of intelligence.
In total, there are fourteen chimpanzees in the institute's laboratory.
Matsuzawa says his research shows chimps are superior than humans in memory tasks.
Initially, the chimps were taught to recognise the arabic numerals from 1-9, which formed the basis of the memory tests.
The test begins with six numerals being displayed on the screen for a split second, before they are masked.
The chimps then have to press the squares in the numerical sequence that corresponds to the numbers that are concealed.
A correct answer is rewarded with a small segment of apple or half a raisin.
However, a reward of food is not guaranteed, with the animals also being rewarded with spoken praise or encouragement.
Matsuzawa says Ayumu, one of the chimps, showed an accuracy of more than 80 per cent using an ability similar to photographic memory.
Also taking the test is Yamamoto Hiroyuki, a first year doctoral student.
But with an average of just 10 per cent he scored considerably worse than the chimps.
But the research team say that is pretty good for a human.
Matsuzawa says that the results indicate that in the course of evolution, humans lost their photographic memory.
Professsor Nicholas Humphrey, of the London School of Economics agrees.
He says the research poses the question: why did the human memory fade compared to that of chimps?
On the face of it, having photographic recall would seem to be a useful and extremely desirable ability.
Nonetheless, Matsuzawa advises caution.
He says we should distinguish from fact and interpretation and that it seems that all chimps have stronger memories than humans.
Matsuzawa suggests that the most plausible explanation is that the common ancestor of humans and chimps may have had a photographic memory.
Humphrey says that perhaps humans lost their photographic memories because there was something to be gained by it and instead developed language.
He says with too strong a memory, the incentive to develop language would not have existed.
Humphrey believes the disadvantages of having a photographic memory are that it prevents the necessity to develop abstract thoughts, and concepts.
In order to develop language, Humphrey says humans had to take a step backwards and lose their memory skills.
The other factor is the youth of Ayumu and his peers.
The memory for images that's needed for the tests resembles a skill found in children, but which dissipates with age.
In fact, the young chimps performed better than older chimps in the new study.
