a former state governor and independent candidate - is in second place in the  polls behind former coup leader Hugo Chavez.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's largest political party - Democratic Action - dumped its candidate to back  Salas in a last effort to defeat Chavez on next Sunday's presidential race.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the last week of campaigning, Venezuelans are gearing up for a presidential election  that promises to shake the country's political core.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, independent candidate Henrique Salas Romer wrapped up his election  campaign with a colourful parade through the streets of Caracas.\u003cbr/\u003eSome three-thousand horsemen and women paraded through the capital on the  candidate's last efforts to rally votes for next Sunday's presidential race.\u003cbr/\u003eSalas is known as 'El Caballito' (Little Horse) because he likes riding horses.\u003cbr/\u003eHe rode alongside former Miss Universe turned soap-opera star Alicia Machado.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's election will be a battle between the country's traditional parties and a  charismatic former coup leader.\u003cbr/\u003eSalas Romer is second in the latest polls following Hugo Chavez - a former paratrooper  who staged a failed coup against the government in 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes next week's voting is important for the political future of the entire region.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd one thing that is very important is that in these elections people are not just  deciding who is going to be president of the republic, but they will be deciding on  Venezuela's destiny, and in some way, the destiny of the Americas.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Henrique Salas Romer, presidential candidate\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuela's largest political party - Democratic Action - dumped its presidential  candidate on Saturday to back Salas in a last-ditch effort to stop Chavez from winning  the presidency.\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders of the A-D - as the centre-left party is known - said Saturday that they dropped  long-time party leader Luis Alfaro Ucero as their candidate. \u003cbr/\u003e77-year-old Alfaro is a distant third in the polls.\u003cbr/\u003eAlfaro refused to quit the race and may remain on the ballot as the party's official  candidate. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, his campaign manager quit, the party withdrew financial support and T-V ads  for him, and party leaders said their powerful\u003cbr/\u003epolitical machine would be behind Salas on election day.\u003cbr/\u003e62-year-old Salas said Saturday night that he would accept the party's support but  indicated he would give no guarantee to bring the party into power if he wins.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Venezuelans blame the country's traditional parties for squandering the world's  largest oil reserves outside the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003e44-year-old Chavez is drawing support from the poor who see him as a hero partly  because of his tough anti-corruption talk.\u003cbr/\u003eThe middle and upper-class fear he will impose a leftist dictatorship and are largely  backing Salas.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)  \u003cbr/\u003eHere in Caracas we are going to show the people of Venezuela that we can get rid of  violence, crime and the lying (politicians) who have fooled the public. We the Apurenios,  as good fighters and as good llaneros are showing our faces to persuade those in  Caracas that Venezuela can continue to live under a democratic system.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Humberto Correa, Salas' supporter\u003cbr/\u003eDemocratic Action officials said the threat to democracy posed by Chavez forced them  to back Salas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe party's backing was expected by many analysts to boost Salas's chances of  victory, although Chavez said he believed he would get many of the party's votes.\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuela's other major traditional party, the social Christian COPEI, also has been  wracked by turmoil, with many members clamouring for the party to drop its candidate -  former Miss Universe Irene Saez - and support Salas.\u003cbr/\u003eSaez, an independent who accepted COPEI's support, says she is staying in the race,  though the party is expected to make a final decision this week.\u003cbr/\u003eSunday's event was aimed at entertaining as well as rallying political support.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish) \u003cbr/\u003eThis is a spectacle never seen before in the history of this country.There has not been  such a large concentration of horses before, not even in the biggest battles of our fight  for independence.
