education in Afghanistan is increasing rapidly in a country where two thirds of the population are aged 24 or younger.
Its led to a rise in private universities who are providing places for students where the government run institutions are unable to meet the demand.
Just 12 years ago the Taliban government barred girls from attending school and many educated Afghans were forced to flee.
Seven thousand eight hundred and seventy students attended higher education colleges in Afghanistan before the U.S. led invasion in 2001.
Today that figure has increased 26-fold to almost 204,000 according to the Ministry of Higher Education.
A fifth of them are women.
The growth has been possible in part because the Afghan government realised that the country's public universities, devastated by years of war, couldn't cope with the new demand.
In 2006 they legalised private higher education.
Today, there are 70 private higher education institutes in Afghanistan, educating about 74,000 students over a third of all students.
Nineteen year old Liza Ormol is a student at Kardan University, a private university in the capital Kabul.
She has big ambitions, aiming for a bachelors degree in business, two master's degrees and a Ph.D.
Liza believes education is important to help get a job but also for family life.
"For me higher education is very important," she says. "For girls may not have to get a job after education, but the education itself is very important, they can educate their children for their futures."
Kardan, the name means professional, was set up 10 years ago by Roeen Rahmani and a group of friends.
They spent US$ 300 on an overhead projector and rented a room to teach a business course to Afghans emerging from civil war and the rule of the Taliban.
Nobody turned up for the first class.
Today it has turned into a private university educating more than 8,000 students in programmes ranging from political science to civil engineering.
Rahmani spent much of his childhood as a refugee in neighbouring Pakistan.
He says he has a bachelor's degree in business, two MBAs and an executive MBA, one of them from the York University Schulich School of Business in Canada..
Rahmani says Kardan has a US$ 4 million operating budget, and charges around US$6,600 for a four-year bachelor's degree.
The students, many of whom have jobs, can pay monthly.
"The vision for Kardan is much bigger, indeed we have started with a very limited number of students with one classroom and right now we have graduated over 15000 students and we currently have around 8000 students studying in Kardan," he says. "But the vision especially for the
