Well first the thrill was to have been offered  the role. And accepting it was never a question. For me it was how the character was  fashioned from this extraordinary life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Sidney Poitier, Actor\u003cbr/\u003eFor his part - Michael Caine was unfazed about his \"minor role\" of FW de Klerk - the  current vice-president - next to Mandela, one of the most loved leaders in the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I always thought that he was a South African Gorbachev. You know I understood, I was  a great admirer of Gorbachev. And then from what De Klerk did, I was a great admirer of  his.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Michael Caine, Actor\u003cbr/\u003eBut South African actor Sello Maake Ka-Ncube isn't happen with the casting of Poitier -  he believes the decision was a \"gross mistake.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWhile he admires Poitier professionally, he feels it isn't right for a foreigner to portray  South Africa's national hero - as they haven't led the life of a South African.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But he doesn't have an African idiom. He will never understand that. And I can't bear to  see a film that, I mean is representative of a national figure being interpreted by  somebody outside, from outside this country. They wouldn't allow any South African to  go and play Malcolm X or whoever - Martin Luther King.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, South African Actor\u003cbr/\u003eThere's also the sticky problem that Nelson Mandela has given someone else the  \"authorised\" rights to adapt his story to film.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're held by Anant Singh, the producer of two South African feature films: \"Sarafina\"  and \"Cry the Beloved Country\".\u003cbr/\u003eSingh is hoping most of the staff on his film will be locals and has high hopes that \"his\"  Mandela will be South African as well.\u003cbr/\u003eNevertheless - he has said if worse comes to worse - he may have to consider a foreign  actor.\u003cbr/\u003eSingh expects to start shooting on his version of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom next  year and release the film in 1998.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am very excited at the fact that I have got these rights. I think that I will do justice to  the book and to the president and make a powerful, very moving, very epic motion  picture. And I think that it will be.
