Close up lithograph \u003cbr/\u003eSt Petersburg in Russia - a city steeped in history, art and literature. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd buried in its streets is a unique treasure - the country's only place where books are still printed using 19th Century techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eRussia in the 1800s was a golden era for writers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe century spawned the talents of the poet and novelist Aleksandr Pushkin, along with two of the greatest novelists ever - Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Sergey Yashin works carefully and thoroughly using printing techniques that would have been familiar to these giants of literature. \u003cbr/\u003eFirst, he chooses characters, then puts the characters into lines, then puts the lines together, so it can form a page. \u003cbr/\u003eIt can take him a day to print just one page of a book. \u003cbr/\u003eYashin is typographer in the Rare Books Publishing House - the only place in Russia where books are being printed in exactly the same manner they were made centuries ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe publishing house produces books using press machines from the 19th century with lead characters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe employees of Rare Books found the ancient printers and press machines in old printing offices around St.Petersburg. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say they were lucky that the Russian and then Soviet publishers were slow in switching to modern methods, meaning that the old machines weren't discarded.\u003cbr/\u003eBut is working with lead dangerous? Sergey Yashin says: \"I can not say it is more harmful then smoking. You can quit smoking, you can quit lead typesetting. Actually, the whole world is quitting smoking and has already quit  hand-set lead typesetting. Everybody is doing it in offset nowadays. We are the only place where all this is being kept, and still works.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe books are illustrated by local artists using original printing technologies like lithography, etching or wood-cut engraving. \u003cbr/\u003eEach book, some of which are only produced in two editions, is bound individually with silk, leather, wood or ceramics and costs thousands of U.S. dollars. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople who work here are real book fans, bookworms, who believe that books could and should be masterpieces of art. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the fact that the handmade books can cost up to 15 thousand U.S. dollars, the publishing house does not make excess profits according to Pyotr Suspitsyn.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he is still proud he produces \"imperishable texts\", like Ecclesiastes, the Ten Commandments or Shakespeare's Sonnets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe books that Suspitsyn publishes are kept in major collections in Russian museums, like the Hermitage - the state museum of art and culture, as well as in the major museums of Europe and U.S.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the books, made to order, are printed especially to be presented to high officials. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral
