Mexico City lawmakers voted to legalise abortion in April this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThroughout Latin America, the first and second of November are days of remembrance for those that have died, the period is referred to as the \"Day of the Dead.\"\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters took advantage of the days of remembrance to make a \"Death offering\" outside the Mexico City congress offices, placing flowers, candles and crosses as a way of demonstrating against the new abortion laws.\u003cbr/\u003eActivist Pilar Rebollo explained why she was taking part in the protest.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to defend and to remember that those children who are dead were people,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They were Mexicans, and we are making this offering for them. We have lit a candle for every one of them.The light of those children will illuminate the consciences of the people, they will illuminate Mexico,\" she added.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico City's leftist government legalised abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, but the procedure remains illegal in the second and third trimesters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe new law has provoked massive protests and controversy. Abortion is legal in most of Mexico only when the mother's life is in danger, in cases of rape or incest, or if the foetus has severe deformities.\u003cbr/\u003eGirls under 18 have to get their parents' consent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposal created an emotional confrontation in a country where the majority of people are Roman Catholic.\u003cbr/\u003eOpponents to the law argue that life begins at conception. Supporters say the law saves the lives of thousands of women.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city and its suburbs are home to about one-fifth of the country's population, and many Mexicans travel to the capital for medical treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico (and other countries in Latin America) where residents gather in local cemeteries to honour the
