security forces in Kabul killed the final attacker in the assassination of Jan Mohammad Khan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, in which Khan, who was governor of the Pashtun-dominated Uruzgan province in the south from 2002 until March 2006, was shot along with Uruzgan lawmaker Mohammed Ashim Watanwal.\u003cbr/\u003eKhan was an adviser to Karzai on tribal issues and was close to the president, a fellow Pashtun.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deaths were announced late on July 17th and one attacker was quickly killed, but fighting continued inside the house until early on July 18th as police tried to take out the remaining assailant who had barricaded himself in the house, police said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shooting and small explosions finally ended about 3 a.m. (2230 GMT) and reporters on the scene saw a body, presumably\u003cbr/\u003ethat of the final attacker, dragged out of the house on a plastic sheet. \u003cbr/\u003eAfghan officials had originally said the attackers were wearing suicide vests but said that this was incorrect and they were armed only with guns and hand grenades.\u003cbr/\u003eOne police officer was killed, the Interior Ministry said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mayor of Kandahar was assassinated on July 27th by a suicide bomber who hid explosives in his turban, Afghan officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eMayor Ghulam Haider Hamidi, who was 65 years old, is the third powerbroker from southern Afghanistan to be slain in July.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was killed inside the heavily fortified compound of a government building in the heart of Kandahar just before he was due to meet citizens involved in a land dispute, according to an employee of his office.\u003cbr/\u003eThe explosion occurred when somebody holding a piece of paper approached him as he was walking with another person, the employee said.\u003cbr/\u003eBlack cloth with thin grey stripes that the bomber had used to wrap his turban could be seen on the ground where he detonated his explosives.\u003cbr/\u003eBlood was spattered on the dirt ground of the compound and the trunk of a nearby tree.\u003cbr/\u003eA Taliban spokesman said they killed Hamidi to avenge the deaths of two children who were killed during recent demolition work in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eTooryalai Wesa, the governor of Kandahar, said the attack had been carried out by \"the enemies of Islam and the enemies of Kandahar.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHamidi's death came just two weeks after President Hamid Karzai's powerful half brother was slain in the southern province that's critical to the US-led war effort.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kabul, the newly appointed US ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker, condemned the assassination.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the assassination of another senior Afghan government official,\" he said during his first news briefing at the US embassy.\u003cbr/\u003eCrocker said the attack was \"another indication of both the challenges that Afghanistan faces but also the extraordinary resilience of the Afghan government and people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the recent string of assassinations could indicate that the Taliban have been damaged \"to the point where they can no longer conduct large scale operations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe compared Taliban operations with the insurgency in Iraq and said \"these are horrific attacks but they can also be interpreted as a sign of significant organisational weakness on the part of the adversary.\" \u003cbr/\u003eOn August 11th locals residents were inspecting the site where a US helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing 38 people.\u003cbr/\u003eA huge crater was left in the ground where the helicopter came down in the Tangi valley area of Wardak province.\u003cbr/\u003eAn eyewitness to the crash, who gave his name only as Farhad, said he saw the chopper hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fired from the local area.\u003cbr/\u003eOn August 10th, NATO said that an airstrike had killed the insurgents responsible for downing the US helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eThe helicopter crash left 30 US troops, seven Afghan soldiers and an interpreter dead.\u003cbr/\u003eF-16 fighter jets killed the insurgents responsible, according to the top American commander in Afghanistan, Marine Corps General John Allen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe military provided few details to back up the claim, but Allen said he was confident the airstrike killed fewer than 10 insurgents involved in the attack on the US Chinook helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a separate statement, the military said the strike killed a Taliban leader and the insurgent who fired the rocket-propelled grenade at the helicopter. \u003cbr/\u003eOn August 14th a team of six suicide bombers launched a coordinated assault on a provincial governor's compound in eastern Afghanistan, according to officials. \u003cbr/\u003e22 people were killed in the attack, in the Parwan provincial capital of Charikar, some 30 miles (50 kilometres) north of Kabul, authorities said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a series of high-profile assaults on prominent Afghan government officials.\u003cbr/\u003eAfghan police said the assault began with a car bomb outside the front gate. \u003cbr/\u003eThe blast blew open a hole in the wall, allowing five insurgents wearing suicide vests and carrying automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades to rush into the compound.\u003cbr/\u003eAfghan police said they killed three of the attackers as they approached the governor's house.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack appeared to target a meeting of top provincial security officials that was taking place in the compound. \u003cbr/\u003eParwan Governor Abdul Basir Salangi was at the meeting, along with Afghan National Police General Abdul Jalil Rahimi, top provincial Afghan army and police officials, and at least two NATO police advisers.\u003cbr/\u003eSalangi, a former rebel commander during the Russian occupation, said he fired at the insurgents with his own machine gun. \u003cbr/\u003e\"My colleagues and I took AK-47s and started fighting with them and shot them, we did not leave the office. The fighting took about 50 minutes and all the suicide bombers were killed,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eSalangi said it was the second time in the past month that he had been the target of an assassination attempt.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack left much of the compound in ruins. \u003cbr/\u003ePart of the governor's offices were burned, broken glass and body parts littered the courtyard, and several cars were wrecked by explosions and bullets.\u003cbr/\u003eSixteen of the dead were civilian Afghan government employees and six were policemen, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry.\u003cbr/\u003eAt nearby Charikar hospital, men with bandages and blood-stained clothes were seen lying in beds as they were treated for their injuries. \u003cbr/\u003eOn September 9th Afghanistan marked the 10th anniversary of the death of the country's national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, one of the most prominent resistance leaders who fought the Soviet troops and their allies in the 1980s.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment officials in Kabul placed wreaths at a special monument which was built in memory of Massoud.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel proud that the grateful Afghan people commemorate this day and this week all over, and we are very grateful to them,\" said Massoud's brother, Wali Massoud.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmad Shah Massoud emerged as an undisputed leader of the Northern Alliance, the group of Afghan commanders who swore to resist the Taliban.\u003cbr/\u003eMassoud was killed on September 9th 2001, by suicide bombers posing as Arab journalists, two days before the September 11th attacks on the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was widely regarded as a plot related to the attacks on America.\u003cbr/\u003eJust weeks before, Massoud had visited the United States, warning of the danger of the Taliban regime and the likelihood of an attack on the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 20th former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who headed a government peace council set up to facilitate contacts with Taliban insurgents, was assassinated by a suicide bomber concealing explosives in his turban, officials said. \u003cbr/\u003eFour of Rabbani's bodyguards also died and a key presidential adviser was wounded.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrent Afghan President Hamid Karzai cut short a visit to the US over the attack, which dealt a harsh blow to peace efforts after a decade of war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe turban bomber entered Rabbani's house in the capital Kabul and blew himself up inside, said Mohammad Zahir, the chief of criminal investigation for the Kabul police.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbani headed the country's High Peace Council, which was set up by the Afghan government to work toward a political solution to the decade-long war.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, it had made little headway since it was formed a year ago.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbani was president of the Afghan government that preceded the Taliban rule. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter he was driven from Kabul in 1996, he became the nominal head of the Northern Alliance, mostly minority Tajiks and Uzbeks, who swept to power in Kabul after the Taliban's fall. \u003cbr/\u003eRabbani is an ethnic Tajik.\u003cbr/\u003eHis killing dampens hopes of starting peace negotiations with Taliban insurgents and also will hamper efforts to keep regional and ethnic rivalries, which feed the insurgency, in check.\u003cbr/\u003eAs one of the wise old men of Afghan politics and the leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Rabbani's role in the attempts to reach out to the Taliban and seeking a political deal with them - with the US blessing - will be hard to replicate in the near future.\u003cbr/\u003eHis death could unleash a well of resentment building up among some senior Northern Alliance members, who accuse Karzai of colluding with the Taliban.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready Afghanistan's ethnic minorities have begun to re-arm in the face of negotiations with the Taliban. \u003cbr/\u003eRabbani's death is likely to accelerate the re-arming and lay the foundation for a bitter civil war once US troops leave the country in 2014\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in New York, US President Barack Obama condemned Rabbani's killing, calling it a \"tragic loss\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"Despite this incident we will not be deterred from creating a path where Afghanistan can live in freedom and safety and security and prosperity,\" he said after meeting with Karzai on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. \u003cbr/\u003eKarzai said \"the mission that (Rabbani) had undertaken was vital to the Afghan people and for the security of our country and the peace of our country.
