Wide of tyres burning outside plant with black smoke rising, workers watching\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers at a dying French tyre factory, who have become the butt of American jokes, staged a last-ditch protest on Tuesday to try to save their jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have been fighting for 62 months in a doomed effort to keep the factory in the northern city of Amiens operating and prevent Goodyear from shifting work to China.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, workers gathered in the parking lot of the plant and burnt a pile of tyres.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protests at the Amiens plant come after efforts to find a new buyer for the struggling plant fizzled.\u003cbr/\u003eAn American executive who considered buying it sent a letter last week to the French government saying France's economic model is too worker-friendly and discourages investment.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have visited that factory a couple of times. The French workforce gets paid high wages but works only three hours. They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three. I told this to the French union workers to their faces. They told me that's the French way!\" Maurice Taylor, the CEO of Titan tyres, wrote to the French government official trying to find a buyer. \"How stupid do you think we are?\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe stinging letter infuriated France's political class and even drew a rebuke from the director of Goodyear France, who insisted the accusations against the workers he's trying to layoff were \"unfair\".\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking from Amiens on Tuesday, union leader Mickael Wamen blasted Taylor. \u003cbr/\u003e\"He has two private jets, a yacht, sailing boats, he has sumptuous houses in the United States. a growing problem across France, where an economic model that features high wages, long holidays and short working weeks is increasingly being called into question. \u003cbr/\u003eThe factory's closure was announced five years ago by Goodyear when workers refused to accept any layoffs. \u003cbr/\u003eIt will be at least 2014 before the French government intervention runs its course and the plant ultimately shuts down.\u003cbr/\u003eIndustrial sites across France are struggling in Europe's downturn. \u003cbr/\u003eFrench unemployment is more than 10 percent and rising.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance's Socialist president, who campaigned against spending cuts and for higher taxes, has been preparing the European Union for more government spending to head off the kind of unrest he sees in Spain and Greece. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Francois Hollande is also warning the French that harder times lie ahead soon, when he'll be forced to get national finances in shape to save the euro and the zone's economic future.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Amiens, with an unemployment rate at 12.5 percent and rising faster than all but one region in France, the future is
