government and international aid agencies, as the fighting in South Waziristan enters its fifth day.\u003cbr/\u003eThe army's offensive against the Taliban has forced families to flee their homes, for fear of getting caught up in the fighting.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the IDPs arrived at Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), the nearest major city outside the conflict zone on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistani government has opened centres where the IDPs can register and claim non-food aid items like blankets and household goods. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, one man who fled his home in South Waziristan, complained that there were too many IDPs for the registration centre to cope with, and that people were not receiving sufficient quantities of aid. \u003cbr/\u003eAt another registration centre in DI Khan, women arrived to collect their aid items which did not include food.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Gulam Sadi, an internally displaced person from South Waziristan called on the government to make sure that the women were being provided for as they were having to attend an alternative distribution centre.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For reasons of honour, nobody is ready to bring their women here,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe army has deployed some 30-thousand troops to South Waziristan against about 12-thousand Taliban militants, including up to 1,500 foreign fighters, among them Uzbeks and Arabs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe region is also considered a major al-Qaida operations and training base.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a brief statement, the military said troops backed by aerial bombing were advancing on three fronts, but were meeting stiff resistance from militants on high ground firing rockets and small arms. \u003cbr/\u003eThey claim to have killed some 90 militants.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is nearly impossible to independently verify information coming from South Waziristan because the army has closed off all roads to the region.\u003cbr/\u003eAs many as 150-thousand civilians, maybe more, have left Pakistan's South Waziristan in recent months, as the Pakistani military prepared to launch an offensive against militant fighters in the remote, rugged region along the Afghan border. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities say up to 200-thousand people may flee in the coming weeks, but the government doesn't expect to have to house them all in camps, because many have relatives in the
