They spent a few hours together and it was a successful experience in the sense that they got on and there was no aggression. But the panda's mating urge is very short and we could not wait for the male to get in the mood, so we had to resort to artificial insemination. Ling Ling shaking water of his back then lying down\u003cbr/\u003eMexico's Chapultepec Zoo resorted to artificial insemination of one of its three female pandas to try and boost the number of these endangered animals in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eFemale panda Xin Xin was artificially inseminated with male sperm from Ling Ling late in March, after an attempt to let nature follow its course failed. Ling Ling was lent by Tokyo's Ueno Zoo last November for a second attempt at breeding in Mexico. The year before the same experience had not been successful.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time he had four months to get used to his new environment and three potential mates. According to the director of Mexico City``s Zoo, Dr. Rafael Tinajero, when Xin Xin entered her mating period, vets at the zoo decided it was time for the couple to get together.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth pandas shared a garden for a whole morning. They got on well but they did not mate. Since the female panda mating period is so short - three days a year, with one day of ovulation - the vets decided to perform the artificial insemination.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is too early to say whether Xin Xin is pregnant or not. Vets will now monitor the hormone levels in her urine and her behaviour to establish whether she´s carrying a baby. They think that performing pregnancy tests on the animal could jeopardise the process. By July, it should be known whether she will deliver a cub.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other two female pandas, Xuan Xuan and Xin Hua, have not entered their mating period, but it could be any day now. Efforts to increase panda numbers by breeding them in captivity, sometimes using artificial insemination, have had only mixed success.\u003cbr/\u003eLing Ling's long-term companion and intended mate, Tong Tong, died of cancer last year without ever giving birth. At 16, Ling Ling is approaching the age limit for fathering a cub. Some studies suggest that only 30 to 40 per cent of male pandas are reproductive. It could be Ling Ling's case.\u003cbr/\u003eLing Ling was given to the Ueno Zoo by China in 1992 as a gift to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the normalisation of bilateral ties between Japan and China. The last birth of a giant panda in Mexico was in 1990, but the cub died on the eighth day. The newborn was accidentally crushed by its mother, who biologists believe was upset at a constant stream of visits from celebrities and other dignitaries.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly about one thousand giant pandas survive in the wild in reserves in western and central China.
