Various of women practicing yoga \u003cbr/\u003eGlobal health leaders are being faced with the fact that 36 million people a year are dying of heart diseases, stroke, cancer, lung disease and diabetes.\u003cbr/\u003eThey''re meeting at the United Nations (Monday 19th Sept) to work out how to tackle the problem, but an influential group of European doctors are warning diabetes cases are soaring out of control. \u003cbr/\u003eChanging people''s diets is a very good start when you''re tackling diabetes.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors turning up for a high level convention on the subject don''t come armed with just a stethoscope.\u003cbr/\u003eThey come ready to persuade people that they''re risking their health and possibly their lives unless they change to a healthier lifestyle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) had expected the number of diabetes cases to be running at 200 million a year.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says instead the figure is much worse indicating 370 million people have the disease, which they claim means it''s growing even faster than before.\u003cbr/\u003eSo on the menu is delicious turkey with herbs and oranges followed by pudding, a fresh and sweet mango mousse.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the Diabetes World Tour which is aiming to help people understand the importance of nutrition and exercise and offering a diabetes screening test at the same time. \u003cbr/\u003eNutritionist Ana Raimundo says:  \"We try to call for a healthy life through healthy recipes that we can included every day (in our daily life) and to give some ideas to the people about what we can change in our lifestyle to prevent the diabetes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEncouraging people to live healthier lifestyles is a challenge.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s easy to to do all the things you''re supposed to when it''s in front of you, it''s a completely different matter to keep the good habits when you''re in a hurry and you''re hungry, or you feel like a cigarette, or perhaps someone offers you a drink.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s promoted by Nordisk laboratories and general manager Antonio Araujo is keen to get the message across. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"We do an early screening to identify the population that has diabetes and still don''t know. Because it''s very important to start from the very beginning to treat people with diabetes.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIf awareness is the first step to changing behaviour then this looks like a potential success.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople queue to be given a blood glucose and eye tests to find out whether they have the common type 2 form of diabetes and if so learn how to reduce the risks of the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eSamira Rodrigues Costa says \"I have some diabetics relatives and I wanted to make the examination.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s a widespread problem. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Portuguese Diabetic Association  claims 12. 3 per cent of people in Portugal actually are diabetics, but a quarter of the entire population has problems related to the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s clinical director Joao Raposo says: \"One third of the adult population have already some problems considered diabetes or pre diabetes, so it''s a public health problem. It also means that someone, almost every family has some connection to people with diabetes.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s a global threat along with other chronic diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eThat''s why the United Nations is having a top-level meeting on non communicable disease prevention and control.\u003cbr/\u003eCountries are being alerted, but not just because of the health issues. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN says many of the millions killed by a diseases which can be prevented by a healthier lifestyle are under the age of sixty.\u003cbr/\u003eThat, according to the UN, triggers serious social and economic consequences. \u003cbr/\u003eUlf Smith has just stepped down as president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).\u003cbr/\u003eHe''s spent years campaigning for more effective action and he believes Monday''s UN meeting is a start.\u003cbr/\u003eSmith says: \"I think all countries want to take it very seriously but there are may be a number reasons difficulties, but I know that there will be a major discussion about this at the United Nations, identifying the fact that what we call non communicable diseases which are non contagious diseases not bacterial, viruses etc, but the chronic diseases usually such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases are, by far, the major killers in the world today and also, by far, costs the health systems most money. Diabetes Federation already warned the time has come for action and simply talking about the problem is not enough.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Federation claims one person dies from diabetes every seven seconds and costs countries around the world $465 billion (USD) annually. \u003cbr/\u003eThat''s for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there is also an optimistic message coming out here.\u003cbr/\u003eChanging your lifestyle, eating healthily and exercising can help prevent disease.\u003cbr/\u003eIt even recommends time for a little
