A continuation of the tradition of the Venice Biennale, which now dates back more than one hundred years, it has introduced certain innovations this year with regard to the organization of the exhibition space, the overall layout and the criteria applied in selecting artists.\u003cbr/\u003eThe International Exhibition, with the official participation of numerous foreign countries, includes the work of even more contemporary and newer artists, many officially selected to represent their nations. New spaces around the Arsenale including the Gaggiandre, the Artiglerie and Tese have been added to the traditional areas of the Castello Giardini and the Corderie. \u003cbr/\u003eThe officially selected artists are this year exhibiting as part of the overall International Exhibition in the Italian Pavilion, and in a specially designated section. Thus all the various exhibition spaces of the Exhibition offer a more open encounter between the different artists irrespective of nationality. Hence the title of the 48th International Exhibition of Contemporary Art will be The Biennale di Venezia - \"d'APERTutto\" - open to all.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Biennale includes some seventy artists from all over the world and provides a contemporary view of the recent work of different generations of artists. About twenty artists, exhibiting installations, paintings and sculptures, represent each of the three generations. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong those exhibiting are German artists KATHARINA FRITSCH who is based in Dusseldorf, MARTIN KIPPENBERGER from Dortmund and DIETER ROTH from Hannover. Yugoslav artist, TODOR STEVANOVIC, Korean artist KIM SOOJA, San Francisco based, TIM HAWKINSON, Milan artist, PAOLA PIVI and Chinese artist Zhang Peili who works in Hangzhou also have works in the Biennale. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the offcially featured artists is American ANN HAMILTON. Born in 1956 in Lima, Ohio and educated at St Lawrence University, Ohio State University, the University of Kansas and Yale,  her contemporary  installations now reside in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. There have been several exhibitions devoted to her work including a travelling show, The Body and the Object: Ann Hamilton 1984-1996 and Ann Hamilton: present-past 1984-1997 at the Musee d'Art Contemporain de Lyon, France.  Her work in Venice considers the value system symbolically expressed by the architecture of the United Sates Pavilion, and the subsequent social history of the nation. The work looks both back to a damaged realism and optimistically forward to the possibility of a more integrated and reciprocal relationship between nature and culture. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year there is an Albanian Pavilion and one of the artists featured in the pavilion is the Kosovo born SISLEJ XHAFA, who works in Pisa and Bologna. His work is called Hot Journey Towards Heaven, an installation dealing with the concept of clandestinity. He suggests that everyone is a clandestine, but in the public opinion the word has taken on a negative value.
