Wide of Tower of London and Tower Bridge\u003cbr/\u003eOne of Britain's top tourist attractions could be added to the list of World Heritage sites designated as 'in danger'. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Tower of London has stood on the banks of the Thames since Medieval times. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now UNESCO is concerned that the iconic landmark is being overshadowed by new and proposed skyscrapers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe future of the Tower will be discussed at the upcomming UNESCO World Heritage Conference in  New Zealand on June 23rd. \u003cbr/\u003eLondon has a unusual skyline. \u003cbr/\u003eIts mix of historical and modern buildings are a testament to the city's evolution.  \u003cbr/\u003eLondon's financial centre, known as 'the city'  has grown in recent decades. \u003cbr/\u003eKnown for its big business and big buildings, the explosive growth of 'the city' is threatening one of London's oldest treasures.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe wealth can be seen in several new skyscrapers, like 'The Gherkin' which was designed by top architect Lord Foster. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) fears that looming sky scrapers could threaten the historic skyline surrounding the Tower of London.\u003cbr/\u003eUNESCO has threatened to place the nine hundred year old Tower on its 'in danger' list if certain measures are not taken.\u003cbr/\u003eAdding the Tower to the in danger list would put extra protections in place to prevent the development of high skyscrapers surrounding the historic site.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Barnes is the Conservation Director for Historic Royal Palaces.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the view from inside the historic site provides a sense of isolation from the busy city beyond its ramparts.  \u003cbr/\u003eBarnes says that views of the Tower itself add to its cultural and historical significance.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe view in question is that of the historic site from London's South Bank.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Historic Royal Palaces say there are eight building projects currently in the planning stages that could affect the visual integrity of the Tower.  \u003cbr/\u003eEach project has the potential to surpass the height of the Gerkin Building (152 metre). \u003cbr/\u003eHigh skyscrapers may also change the view from the Tower's historic courtyard.\u003cbr/\u003eApproximately two million tourists visit the Tower of London each year.
