These actually are saturated with asphalt and there's been no change in the bone structure itself. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits, the noise of city traffic can be heard as scientists dig deep into an era when Los Angeles was a coastal plain occupied by giant elephant-like mammoths and sabre-toothed cats.  \u003cbr/\u003ePalaeontologists have uncovered the fossil remains of creatures trapped by black, sticky tar, thousands of years ago.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe tar, or asphalt, is actually a low grade of crude oil that occurs naturally in the region.  \u003cbr/\u003ePit-91 excavation manager Christopher Shaw said the tar acted as a unique preservative, trapping microscopic matter inside the bones.\u003cbr/\u003eTechnicians detected D-N-A (deoxyribonucleic acid) inside the relics, providing modern day man with a genetic blueprint for animals that roamed the earth in the ice age.   \u003cbr/\u003eFossils have been recovered from the tar pits in the area known as La Brea near downtown Los Angeles since 1906.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring that time, more than one million (m) bones from more than 200 species have been recovered from La Brea's tar pits, billed as the only urban Ice Age dig in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eLast summer's dig produced more than 13 hundred fossil specimens ranging from mammals to plant remains of the ice age era.\u003cbr/\u003eThe site is best known for the quality and quantity of its sabre-tooth cat remains, which are prominently displayed
