Wide exterior of mall \u003cbr/\u003eA day after the worst mass killings in Omaha's history, residents of this Nebraska community were in mourning, struggling to work out why the massacre occurred and how they might get their lives back to normal.\u003cbr/\u003eThat sense of normalcy was shattered on Wednesday when a 19-year-old gunman went on a shooting rampage in a popular department store, killing nine people, including himself. \u003cbr/\u003eHoliday shoppers were making their way through the Westroads Mall on Wednesday afternoon, when sounds of Christmas music were interrupted by gunshots.\u003cbr/\u003eWitnesses said people fled to dressing rooms and barricaded themselves in offices and restrooms.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore 19-year-old Robert Hawkins turned the gun on himself, eight victims were dead, including six store employees and two customers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe gunman left a note behind which hinted at a troubled life, police said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 19-year-old had recently split with his girlfriend and been fired from his job at McDonald's, according to people who knew him. \u003cbr/\u003eThe note he left behind read, in part, \"Now I'll be famous.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe had a criminal record for drug and alcohol offences and had left or been kicked out of his parents' house. \u003cbr/\u003eHawkins may have smuggled an assault rifle into the mall underneath clothing, Omaha police said on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Omaha police spokesperson said he appeared to be concealing something balled up in hooded sweat shirt on a surveillance video.\u003cbr/\u003eThe customers killed were Gary Scharf of Lincoln, Nebraska, and John McDonald of Iowa, police said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe employees killed were Angie Schuster, Maggie Webb, Janet Jorgensen, Diane Trent, Gary Joy and\u003cbr/\u003eBeverly Flynn.\u003cbr/\u003eAs word of the shooting spread, panic and fear ensued, not just in the mall, but throughout the entire Omaha community.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It touches all of us.  This is a very intimate community, a very small town in many, many ways,\" said longtime Omaha resident Jeanne Barmettler.\u003cbr/\u003eA day later, the mall remained closed as authorities continued to investigate what may have motivated the teen to go such a violent shooting spree.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shooting was Nebraska's deadliest since 1958, when a gunman killed ten people in Nebraska and
