months in a Russian jail for bringing hunting-rifle ammunition into the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe release of Miles comes a day after the Moscow City Court reduced his three-year sentence for smuggling and ordered him set free.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television footage showed Miles going out of jail and being greeted by friends. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking to AP Television outside the jail, Miles said he believed the prosecutor had a very thin case. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The only thing the prosecutor could say was that she felt that I knew that I was breaking the law,\" the pastor said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"And that's her justification for wanting to give me such a serious sentence,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"But who would risk prison for a 25 (US) dollars box of bullets, that you could pastor of Christ Community Church in Conway, South Carolina. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was convicted in April after security officers at a Moscow airport found a box of .300-calibre cartridges in his luggage.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has taken full responsibility for his arrest, which he said resulted from unfamiliarity with Russian customs rules. \u003cbr/\u003eHe repeatedly apologised, saying that the ammunition was for a Russian friend who had recently bought a Winchester rifle and that he did not know bringing such ammunition into the country was illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eDefence lawyer Vladimir Ryakhovsky argued that the English-language customs signs at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport were confusing and made no mention of ammunition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lower Golovinsky District Court judge rejected the lawyer's arguments and Miles' apologies, saying she could not condone ignorance of Russian customs regulations and noted Miles had visited the country more than 10 times.\u003cbr/\u003eHe had been sentenced to 3 years in prison for smuggling hunting ammunition into the country.\u003cbr/\u003eMiles' case had drawn the support of dozens of U.S. senators and representatives, who complained that the sentence was too harsh.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Moscow City Court ordered on Monday Phillip Miles' sentence to be reduced to 10 months and suspended the six months remaining in his sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eRyakhovsky said after the verdict that the judges might have been encouraged by the new President Dmitry Medvedev's call for stronger independence of courts. \u003cbr/\u003eMedvedev has pledged to give more freedom to businesses, civil society, media and courts which have suffered from heavy interference by authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe statements raised hopes that Medvedev could soften some of the most repressive policies of his predecessor and mentor, Vladimir Putin.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
