Mid of McCardel next to kayaks heading toward open water\u003cbr/\u003eAustralian endurance athlete Chloe McCardel is stroking steadily through the balmy waters off the Cuban coast in an attempt to become the first person to swim from Havana to the US state of Florida without a protective shark cage.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCardel says she expects to spend about 60 hours in open sea before reaching the Florida Keys, a little more than 100 miles (170 kilometres) to the northeast. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the way she will be braving exposure, sharks and stinging jellyfish, and pushing the limits of human endurance. \u003cbr/\u003eMcCardel arrived at Havana's Hemingway Marina in a pink classic car. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm good. I'm pretty excited and trying to stay calm and relaxed and just think about the finish,\" McCardel said. \u003cbr/\u003eMcCardel was joined by her husband Paul McQueeney, who himself has completed a crossing of the English Channel.\u003cbr/\u003eShe began heading towards the Florida Keys accompanied by kayakers and a support boat. \u003cbr/\u003eAmerican Diana Nyad and Australian Penny Palfrey have attempted the crossing four times between them since 2011, but each time threw in the towel part way through due to injury, jellyfish stings or strong currents. \u003cbr/\u003eAustralian Susie Maroney did it in 1997, but with a shark cage. \u003cbr/\u003eA 32-person support team that includes weather experts and doctors are accompanying McCardel on her ocean odyssey.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery half-hour or so, she plans to pause to eat and drink to stay hydrated. \u003cbr/\u003eA special equipment includes an electromagnetic field in the water around her that is designed to keep sharks at bay.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCardel, who lives in Melbourne, has been swimming since childhood and also competed in triathlons. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to her website, she has made six solo crossings of the English Channel, two double-crossings in 2010 and 2012 and won the 28.5-mile (46-kilometres) Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in 2010. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's been training for the Havana-Key West swim for the last six months, averaging about 37-56 miles (60-90 kilometres) a week.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCardel is also swimming to raise money to support cancer research, people who suffer from the disease and their families, and promoting the idea that an active, healthy life can help keep it at bay. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's dedicating the swim in part to her mother, a breast cancer
