Close to mid shot of Roberts\u003cbr/\u003eAcademy award winner Julia Roberts is asking lawmakers of the U.S. Congress for money to help find a cure for Rett Syndrome.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was in Washington DC on Thursday, appearing before a panel on Capitol Hill with a plea for funding to study the illness. \u003cbr/\u003eRett, or R.S., is a neurological condition that affects girls between six and eight months of age and leads to severe disability.\u003cbr/\u003eRoberts greeted members of a House appropriations panel responsible for funding medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eThen Roberts fought back tears during testimony as she described her friendship with Abigail, an R.S. victim who died last June at the age of 10.\u003cbr/\u003eRett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder historically believed to affect one in 10,000 females. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is now believed that the prevalence of R.S. may be much higher.
